Entitlements

The current debacle in education over Leaving Cert results is a stark example of lack of thought about the fundamentals of human rights. Should high marks in an exam entitle one child to a place in some coveted university course while denying it to another child who has lower marks. Put another way does high intelligence give a student more entitlements.

The Leaving Cert never was much good anyway. It was a poor predictor of future progress in education. There were a lot of drop-outs in 3rd level, I think. It cramped education in secondary schools which, mostly, had degenerated into grind schools. Teachers were never really trusted. Look at the mess created by theorems to modify teachers' assessment of students this year. The exam never took place this year but the culture of the exam survived. It's time to forget about exams in secondary schools. Just ballot for places in 3rd level and give every one an equal chance. Needless to say univeristies and their dopplegangers need to look at what they are doing. A lot of it is irrelevant and unnecessary. I think far fewer courses are needed. Professional training might be done more effectively if it were taken at post graduate level. If there are courses such as music or building where special aptitudes are a sine qua non then it is properly up to the higher level colleges to pick their clients.
