Halloween Return to Shannon, October 31st
As thousands of U.S. troops pass through Shannon on a monthly basis to maim and kill, and to be maimed and killed, the pacifist movement, Dublin Catholic Worker, have called for a multi-faith/no faith vigil for peace to take place at Ireland's welcome mat for the US war machine, Shannon Airport.
The movement will gather at 1pm at the LIDL car park in Shannon town centre. A peace walk to the Airport Terminal will take place from 1.30pm. The guest speaker is well-known US Anti-war Activist Carmen Trotta (War Resisters League), and a die-in will take place at the Airport terminal building from 2.30pm, while the names of the Iraqi and coalition dead are read out.
360,000 U.S. troops have passed through Shannon Airport in the past three years alone since the 'War on Terror' was declared by the Bush Administration. US military airlines, and civilian airlines contracted by the US military to deploy troops and weaponry, have been landing and refueling. They have been using Irish airspace, catering and duty-free facilities at Shannon and Baldonnel in their preparation to wage war, engage in invasion, maintain occupation, defend and enforce exploitation, and sanitise imperialism, all in the name of Western 'democracy'.
Damien Moran of the Dublin Catholic Worker said: 'Sunday 31st marks the first demonstration at Shannon Airport initiated by any sector of the Irish peace movement in 2004. This is only the beginning of what we hope will be a resurgence of grassroots activites against war and for nonviolent peace and justice.
Lets start building from the bottom-out in an attempt to nurture nonviolent resistance/civil disobedience, in the spirit of the Nuremburg Demand.'

I do vaguely remember being at Shannon in June for something.... oh yes, the peace camp that was set up when Bush came over. Plus in March there was something in Shannon http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=63935
I support what you are doing, but don't try to claim it all as your own.
Best of luck by the way. I will try to get up if I can, but if I can't, hope it goes well.
i read that and said is it?, but didn't remember Bush either sucessful as it was, it was reactive...
'initiated by any sector of the peace movement.'
The Peace movement did not set the stage for J25/26. The E.U./U.S. summit was initiated by the neo-liberals. Those who engaged in the various demo.'s during that period did an excellent job.
We hope that a weekly vigil will begin at Shannon for a couple of hours to create a space for distributing information against the U.S. military presence there, dialogue so that we can better understand and calm the fears of locals and workers. The Pitstop Ploughshares crew will base themselves off the dual carriage-way at Bunratty castle due to their bail restrictions, while those at the Shannon demo. will approach the warport in rememberance of the war dead.
Hope to see you there or there abouts
