The refusal of the HSE to protect elderly patients in nursing homes is yet another example of how out of touch the organization is with public opinion, a spokesman for Republican Sinn Fein said today.

The refusal of the HSE to protect elderly patients in nursing homes is yet another example of how out of touch the organization is with public opinion, a spokesman for Republican Sinn Fein said today.

Des Long from Corbally in Limerick, chairman ofthe Munster RSF Executive said while only a minority of nursing homes mistreat patients, they must be named and shamed. The HSE name and shame fast food outlets on health grounds yet the very same HSE refuse to name nursing homes where patients are ill-treated.

If a fast food outlet has mouse droppings it is closed down by the HSE yet a nursing home can abuse elderly patients and it is protected and given anonymity by the HSE There can be no excuse for the HSE refusing to name and shame these places. While the vast majority of homes are well run and offer firstclass care, there are a few who abuse their elderly patients.

By refusing to publicly name them the HSE is tarnishing the goodname of all nursing homes. If rogue nursing homes knew they would be named and shamed elderly patients would not be ill-treated. Instead the HSE is a party to an ongoing cover up of these disgraceful places.
