CYM Oppose Undemocratic Government Tactics On Lisbon Treaty

category national | eu | press release author Friday April 18, 2008 12:06author by Nikita - CYM

The Connolly Youth Movement is appalled by the contents of a leaked email containing a confidential briefing by Daniel Mulhall, Director-General on the EU at the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs to a British diplomat Elizabeth Green. The CYM believes that this clearly shows the attitude of the Irish and EU establishment to the Irish people and the upcoming referendum. The confidential email shows that the Irish government is intent on pushing this Treaty through without the serious debate that the issue warrants. They want to confuse the Irish people, in the hope that by not understanding the ramifications of approving this treaty, they will vote yes.

The Connolly Youth Movement condemns the undemocratic tactics of the Irish and EU establishments. The CYM believes that this is part of an attempt to manipulate the Irish people and stop them from gaining a thorough understanding of the Treaty. This is clearly outlined when Mulhall writes that the Treaty "is largely incomprehensible to the lay reader. Most people would not have the time to study the text". It shows the disregard that Irish and EU establishments have for the people of this country. Also it is clear that there is a concerted effort to hide certain aspects of the treaty. It shows the government policy of directing attention away from the treaty when it says that there "aim is to focus the campaign on the overall benefits of the EU rather than the Treaty itself"

It is obvious that the government does not want the people to read the Treaty. They want to kill off any opposition to the referendum and indeed to the European Union in general. This e-mail shows what the EU is really about, the erosion and destruction of democracy. It is imperative that the Irish people do not allow this to happen. They must read about this Treaty, and when they do only a no vote will be possible.
