The announcement by the Dublin Administration that a false name for Derry can be listed as the county of birth on a Free State passport amounts to an assault on Irish national identity, a spokesman for Republican Sinn Féin has said.

The announcement by the Dublin Administration that a false name for Derry can be listed as the county of birth on a Free State passport amounts to an assault on Irish national identity, a spokesman for Republican Sinn Féin has said.

“Are they now to allow the use of King's County and Queen's County to please their British masters, or are the people of County Derry to be singled out for this reprehensible treatment?” he asked.

“This decision makes about as much sense as allowing the former name for County Derry, i.e. County Coleraine, to be recorded on the passport,” he added.

This is another attempt by both the Free State and the British government to erode our liberties. And it is another step backwards in the struggle towards Irish independence. Well done in issuing this press statement. Dublin and London, take note!

We'll wait and see if there is enough public outrage to force a re-think of this policy.

Keep up the good work.

The fact that it may encourage northerners to obtain an Irish passport and possibly begin to see themselves as Irish rather than British, is to be welcomed I would have thought.

right, bar or no bar... thats not the craic..
the people of derry have already made an effort to change the official name of the city through the british system. they dont want it , dont use it, but of course the queen does want it and therefore decided to keep it.
this idea of persuading 'northeners' is the most short sighted ridiculous idea any so called irish unionists. do u really think that they would want to unite with the republic if it meant not being part in some way or another, of britain.. give it up.. wont work becuase fundamentally they are british... and whys that? because they recognise that although born on this island theyre origins are obviously on the other one ... planters, settlers, colonisers.. whateveru wanna call them.. it is their origins afterall..
unity is ephemeral ... having alot of wanes who speak own language is the only way unity will be achieved... only another 50 or so years to go.. then the tables'll be turned, demographically!

Curious that RSF refers to a "Free State Passport" - none of those have been issued in decades!

I never said that unionists would want to 'unite with the republic'

I said that the may begin to feel more 'Irish' than 'British' - which is all we can probably hope for, for the moment

excuse me for the assumption..
but anyway.. i dont hope for that..... and i dont believe that they will ever feel irish unless we continue along the path of fogetting who we are... leaving our language languishing on a thread, depreciating our own cultural heritage. i.e. maintaining the idea of cultural inferiority.. and eventually sucumbing to the idea that we are only west-brits . my irish identity is not one i share with alot of people , unfortunately, maybe one day the rest of ireland will realize that its time we looked further afield for better examples of better cultures and took a page from other national books. what i mean is that the revolution is not completely political, not even mainly, it is cultural revindication.

For some reason UK driving licences list the holders "Town of birth"

But those born in Londonderry are now afforded the luxury of a choice whether to use the long or short form of that particular citys name on their driving licence.

Yet someone born in Diyarbakır has "Diyarbakır, Turkey" given as their town of birth on their driving licence even though Diyarbakır is actually in Kurdistan

Go figure !
