"Michael" (Dir. C.T. Dreyer, 1924)
A big brooding drama about an older artist who is in love with a young model. The rarely seen Michael is about inspiration, about love and lust, about getting old, about friends who become lovers and lovers who become friends... To put it in two brush-strokes: this is a film about artists, and a proudly arty film.

MICHAEL
Germany.1924. Silent. B&W. 90 min.
Original title: Mikaël
Dir: Carl Theodor Dreyer
Cast: Benjamin Christiansen, Walter Slezak, Nora Gregor
Script: Thea von Harbou, from a novel by Herman Bang.
Michael was based on a controversial gay novel about the famous sculptor August Rodin, who was outed in the book. Director Carl Theodor Dreyer is considered a master of cinema, and this is one of his lesser known films. Famous for his minimalist style, often imitated without success, Dreyer creates a very intense atmosphere and secures great performances from his actors. The script was written by the extraordinary Thea vor Harbou, a multi-talented and notorious woman who adapted a number of her own novels for the screen, including Metropolis, which was filmed by her husband and went on to become one of the most important films of all time. A new print of Metropolis was discovered last year and the film has caused a wave of sensation around the world. This screening of Michael offers a rare opportunity to savour the combined talents of two genial creators, Dreyer and Harbou, together in a gay film.
