Protest in support of housing activists at the Criminal Court of Justice
The background to this is on Oct 2nd members of An Spréach and D8HAC were again before the courts in relation to an incident in Tom Kelly Flats, Charlemont Street, where 8 activists were arrested for assessing whether it was feasible or not to make habitable, one the many unused and vacant flats, within the complex. read full story / add a comment

After a May Day Bank Holiday fire, an IndiGoGo crowdfund is running for the eco restoration of Robin Gill cottage Last May bank holiday, a fire at the cottage in Ballinamuck burned everything back to the walls. Wednesday 21st saw another successful defence against an eviction in Dublin. This time in the Stoneybatter area. We put out an alert after we were told that a gang of 3 men with crowbars "came this afternoon and broke in to one of the houses. About 40-50 people showed up outside to show support, then 5 Garda showed up. People inside resisted and argued until the alleged owners and Garda left the house and left the street to a large round of applause. read full story / add a comment

Emergency situation in Calais! All squats and camps will be evicted in the next few days! In the course of the next few days, three camps will be destroyed by the police. More than 600 people live in these camps, which were won through constant migrant struggle after a long series of evictions. No solution has been proposed for the evicted migrants. Moreover, a social center and two further squats are up for eviction starting on May 30th. All told, more than 800 people will be put on to the street. read full story / add a comment

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown (DLR) is facing a housing crisis. As international financial vulture funds descend on Dublin and are forcing up the property prices again as they seek to get a return on their billions because bank interest rates are so low, this has resulted in rents rising where they are now highest in the country. The result has been that now thousands of families are unable to afford the rents as they are being forced up by landlords. In DLR there are over 4,000 families on the housing waiting list. The national figure is 90,000. An emergency protest for housing is taking place outside outside the Town Hall while the council have a housing meeting. read full story / add a comment

Today during the March of Independence in Warsaw (Poland), nationalist militants broke off from the march and attacked the squat "Przychodnia" social centre. They were trying to "get" the centre. The police stood by and did not intervene for at least 20 minutes read full story / add a comment

There is a new squat in Dublin up in Grangegorman where all the DITs will be moving in the next few years. It has been setup by a group of political squatters. They now face eviction from the row of empty, unused, rotting houses in Lower Grangegorman and they are asking people to come and help resist. - 300,000 empty houses in Ireland, 5,000 people homeless -- The WSM caught up with them for an interview last week to find out more.... read full story / add a comment

A fire broke out this morning at around 2am in Tom Kelly Flats, Charlemont Street, leaving many people trapped inside their homes. Residents in the 3rd – Block were woken to the yells of “Fire!” by a concerned neighbour in the adjacent block, as the blaze quickly engulfed the main hall and stairway. read full story / add a comment

Last week Detroit was officially declared bankrupt . Long time downtown residents of the city last week vowed to resist evictions planned in order to sell off their homes to the super rich . The evictions are being touted as essential cost saving measures - part of an emergency plan involving "gentrification" of the Metropolitan area of the city. Writing in the Herald yesterday, TV economics pundit Eddie Hobbs advised Irish people with at least a million to invest that the smart money was going on premium location properties in "distressed" cities like Detroit . From Justice Minister Alan Shatter's statement on mortgage default and repossessions ,Dec 2012 "All mortgages contain remedies that may be exercised by lending institutions in cases of mortgage default. Repossession in the event of such default is, therefore, an existing contractual right. In a well-known 2011 case (Start Mortgages), the High Court found that enactment of reforming legislation in 2009 may have had the unintended consequence in certain cases of restricting lending institutions from asserting their repossession rights. read full story / add a comment

The central bank is planning changes to the Code of Protection on mortgage arrears, these changes will mean it will be easier for people to be counted as non co-operating and thus make repossession easier, please send the submission below to code@centralbank.ie or make your own submission and send before April 10th to ensure your opposition to this is taken into consideration, with 95,000 people in arrears because of this banking led recession, the people who are bailing out the banks need fairness, there is nothing fair in all powers of discretion, supervision and appeals being with the banks who will not consider the good of the person or common good of the country. read full story / add a comment
