The ban on Ricky Gervais's billboard saying "Welcome to London, don?t forget your stab vest" shows we are no longer free, says Lee Taylor. It turns out you can be stabbed on your commute but not joke about it.

Shell to Sea Day of Solidarity

category mayo | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Tuesday October 11, 2011 23:18author by AC Report this post to the editors

Day of Solidarity, at Shell site, Aughoose, Erris, Co. Mayo and at Solidarity Camp; Friday 11/11/2011

In order to mark two anniversaries:

1. the 5th anniversary of the baton charge and violence by Gardaí against protestors opposed to the Corrib Gas Project http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mz0zYd93nfo ;
2. the 15th anniversary of the hanging of Ken Saro Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists who opposed Shell in Nigeria http://royaldutchshellplc.com/2011/06/23/shell-and-the-...wiwa/ ;

Shell to Sea has called for a Day of Solidarity at the site in Co. Mayo, where Shell are preparing to bore a two mile tunnel, to land raw gas stolen from the people of Ireland. People opposed to this state-aided theft, with its attendant despoliation of the environment and human rights abuses, are valiantly continuing to hamper Shell’s work with protests and direct action (http://www.shelltosea.com/content/roadblocks-continue-c...eview)

Shell's work continues despite the fact that their legal permissions (which are alleged to have been corruptly awarded) are undergoing three separate judicial reviews which are in progress at the moment. Shell are so sure they will receive the outcome they want from the reviews that they are sending letters to locals detailing the haulage of vast quantities of peat, which they intend to start soon.

The protestors must brave physical abuse by IRMS, Shell’s private security guards, and Gardaí who attempt to move people off the road, some using their ‘pressure point’ method, causing severe pain to the recipients.

Solidarity is urgently required to support the people placing their bodies on the line for justice. Participation in the protests is welcome but not mandatory; visiting the solidarity camp, moral support and other forms of solidarity are also good.

Dublin Shell to Sea will organise a bus from Dublin to the Solidarity Camp (which has just moved to the drier 'Winter Field') if there is sufficient demand. Please text 086 736 2417 if you might be interested in travelling by bus - it's a hassle free door-to-tent journey and also a good way to meet fellow campaigners and make the weekend last longer.
