Hope this went well but please people,
stop calling this "the household tax"
and start calling it what it is: "THE FAMILY HOME TAX"

its a way to load up tax and penalties for years on the houses/farms of the poor then to force a sale when someone dies.

They are trying to take away what little the poor have left, i.e. the modest houses / farms that have been passed on through generations to them.

It's also gentrification through the back door.

This tax is nothing to the rich but it will gradually push poorer people into rental accomodation.

Why not just a tax on all secondary property other than the home?

Why not a maximum wage?

Why not close all tax loopholes?

The Common Good

If you have made your way to this web-site please make the effort to come out and support this campaign. Even if you don't normally support the likes of Joe Higgins or Clare Daly, you still have a place in this campaign which is vitally important to all our futures. Think of the a term not normally associated with Irish Politics, which is the , "Common Good."

I don't support all of what the likes of Clare and Joe say as the way forward for this country, but what I do believe is that they both have the Common Good of the Irish people at the heart when putting forward all of their arguments. Looking around Dail Eireann their are not many politicians that I can say that about, a few exceptions in my mind would be Shane Ross, Pearse Doherty and Stephen Donnolly. So don't consider this campaign a left wing only zone. This campaign concerns every single citizen of Ireland. Just think about it for a minute, here we have this government threatening all of us who don't pay with fines and even jail. At the same time bankers and crooked politicians are still walking free with no prospect of facing justice for the foreseeable future.

We have the Labour party in Government that introduced tax amnesties for the rich when they didn't pay their taxes and at the same time threatening ordinary citizens with jail who cannot afford to pay their household charge, hippocracy of the worst kind.

This campaign to me is just the start of a bigger campaign, with Irish people fighting to get their democracy back, out of the hands of the powerful vested interest here and in Europe. Consider if this Compact agreement is passed, what do you think will happen? All the taxes we have to pay will continue to increases to pay back foreign banks that invested in a private bank here. Enda Kenny and Eamon Gilmore are doing a great job, but not for us, the Irish tax-payer, but for Angela Merkal and the private German and other European banks that took a private bet on Anglo.

I wouldnt be surprised if our Enda and Eamon win a German People of the year awards, for saving the German banks with Irish tax-payers money.

Sorry for going off track a bit, but please do your best to make it on Saturday to show this Government that we have a back bone unlike the leaders of this present Government.

..think that special focus should be put on the Labour party, who are supposed to inherit the mantle of Connolly?

After all, the blueshirts just do what it says on their Tory/Unionist label, Labour are supposed to be on the side of the excluded, but the party has been hijacked by a cadre of professional liars.

They've turned the bend so sharp they've replaced the neo-con PDs as prop for the midstream conservatives. How can we have democratic debate with such duplicity and mendacity?

Its a central lie needs exposing and exploding. Class treason. Half a million disemployed, 70,000 emigrating annually, and they justify their obscene salaries by telling us they plan for 120,000 jobs by 2016...how will that make a dent as the schoolleavers and graduates exit education???

Thats no solution, its an admission of political idiocy.

It is part of the 90 billion euro we owe. All this talk about dole cheats is designed to take the focus off the real culprits. If you consider how much cheating is costing the state and remember they are likely to be estimates and at the higher end for maximum effect, it is still very small change in comparison to the billions for the banks.

What the media and govt are good are doing is talking up 100s of millions and then talking about 2 billion here and 3 billion there. It seems people constantly forget that 1 billion = 1,000 million and on March 31st we will be paying 3,000 million out on these promisory notes and yet 3 billion out of 90 billion is still only at tiny fraction.

It is very important to get the figures in perspective and ask yourself why all the emphasis on the much smaller numbers?

It's to save taxes so we can pay the euro debts. But If they sorted out all the dole cheats who are working and claiming welfare along with other expenses we would make a noticeable saving..Our government just cannot think, original thought is not something they are good at.Its an old boys club full of geriatrics and the same old back clappers who first got into government in the bertie/charlie haughey era,and it takes them ten years or more to admit to a scandal, and an expensive tribunal following. Why did anybody think enda kenny of FG would be any different, there all the same club corrupt to the core.Look at the ruari quinn incident where he was falsley claiming for travel expenses up to a couple of thousand euros.

household charges for nothing..they are asking for 100 euros tax for providing no services,no bin service no nothing..pay up or else you get a 2000 euro fine,if that isnt bully tactics i dont know what is,what they are doing is extortion and should be classed as illegal,if i tried that on someone i would be thrown in jail.

Taoiseach,

Just dropping you a line before this Household Charge Tax really kicks off and ends up in a FG disaster. I trust you are not tired of correspondence on the topic.

I am sure you have heard all the arguments but at the end of the day it comes down to an emotional reaction on behalf of the citizen - We have already paid tax on the income that we have used to buy our homes and we have paid taxes on the purchase price and so we object to paying tax on what is just a static asset that we live in. You could think of it like buying clothes and paying another tax every day you get into them.

Look at the financial take – The total yearly VAT income to the state is something like 17 billion, the take on this household tax will be 160 million. This amounts to less than one percent of the VAT take.

If you really need the money then better to spread out the tax over the existing income tax areas small increases in VAT, excise and the other taxes so that the pain is almost, but of course not entirely, unnoticed. We will of course complain but eventually will accept it. Then the matter will be forgotten and we can all move on. However keep on this current track and the situation can only get worse, the publicity will only get more damaging, the public will only become more discontent, the perception of FG will be damaged again, another own goal for FG.

We already have an efficient tax collecting system in this state called the Revenue Commissioners, so let people have a one stop shop for tax collection and paying. Stop creating more paperwork and consequently more difficulty for people to pay their taxes. We already have to fill in enough paperwork to pay all our taxes, creating another stratum of paperwork creates more discontent when it comes to paying taxes. What is wrong with keeping it simple.

Governments in power can have a tendency to ignore the wishes of the people who voted for them. Some of the FG spokesperson in this matter have sounded harsh, but I still believe that we have some sensible people in the organisation who can put their hand on their heart and say that they are going down the wrong road here and replace the tax with something simple like the above. It takes a big person to say they were wrong, but the sooner it is done the sooner the pain is over and life moves on. Good Luck.

The point is right if we all REFUSED TO PAY there wouldnt be a lot they could do if we ALL sang from the same hymn sheet.I was watching RTE news yesterday and they stated that ''if we didnt pay we would get the fine''.What i think will happen is everybody will bow down and pay them.In the 60's - 70's before all that water charge etc was scrapped, the rubbish and water services were part of the household charge. They are basically asking us for 100 euros and providing no service, its like a loan shark asking you to pay up or else..

People may find it useful to look through the actual Act (36 of 2011) passed by the Dail covering the Household Charge.

The Bill passed through various stages and these are listed here:
http://www.oireachtas.ie/viewdoc.asp?DocID=19733&&CatID...ing=0

And the final Act passed in Dec 2011 is available below.

Note: As far as I know a piece of legislation is referred to as a Bill before it is passed and while it can be amended and once passed, it is referred to as an 'Act'.
