Cock fighting increase in Ireland

COCK FIGHTING IN IRELAND: INFORMATION NEEDED
The AOHS has received information that a Cock fighting event will be held in Ireland this coming Saturday, 2nd June 2012. We were told that it will be organised by some of the Travelling Community. It is apparently well known by blood sports enthusiasts in the area.
The area is Tipperary/ Waterford, near the border. The alleged event we are told is apparently to be put on utube.

As an increase in cock fighting in Shandon in the Waterford area has been discussed on WLR radio .It appears back gardens are being used in housing estates to hold birds. Also birds to be used for fighting were seized in Clonmel recently .
Fights have been held in Cavan and Longford and dead and injured birds have been found in Dundalk.
Cock-fighting is illegal in Ireland but is reported to take place during the spring and summer months. During a fight, two birds are allowed to keep fighting until one dies and big money can ride on the outcome.
APPEAL
We now appeal for any information regarding the possible Saturday fight or other events to be sent to us. We have alerted Gardai as to the information we have received.
It is difficult to confirm if these reports about actual fights are real but this sick practise is definitely happening here. One report alleged a cock fight happened at the back of a pub last year.

We welcome any information to 0872651720 or emailed to bigbrownrat@gmail.com or PO Box 4734. D 1.

So it is not enough that people don't care enough for the lives of these animals not to eat the birds, nor the lives of fellow humans, subjecting themselves to antibiotics , growth hormones and whatever else is pumped into the vast majority of bird flesh in order to over supply the "food" market. Some more morally deficient individuals have decided to meet at 6am in a field somewhere to witness the barbaric sight of two childlike creatures hacking each other apart in a bloodbath. What a shameful way to live your life. My thoughts are with the birds that are caged up somewhere at this moment, oblivious to their bloody fate.

The premier internet site representing live hare coursing and the whole greyhound industry in Ireland, "Greyhound Nuts", carried these comments on the upcoming cockfight spectacle. Interesting how none of them suggested reporting it to the Gardai??? And they knew so much about it beforehand??? Notice J Scully's indepth knowledge of the fieldsport. The same J Scully attacks anti coursing groups day in and day out for being prepared to resort to "extremist activities". I'd call cockfighting fairly extreme...and I'd say the same about Scully's favourite "sport" of hare coursing.

It's big business and attracts large gatherings. Many make the journey over from England with their team of birds. The gambling that goes on at these gatherings is unreal. Apparently all the birds are weighed in and matched to fight accordingly. Bets are made on each individual bout and the losers end up as dinner. The Gardai have a lot more to do than raid these events and the boys know it.

You write so passionately about cockfighting, but what have you got to say about the establishment killing children every other day in Afganistan -- You people are lost in the propaganda of life. If you were born in the Philippines you would have been born most probably a cockfighter, but in England you were born to be confused by the official view. Daemon.

Daemon complains that human children are dying while people worry about cockfighting. Why can't we oppose and take action against both? Daemon - show us how we can help your kids and we will!

Tom Regan wrote The Case for Animal Rights and he says we can care about both humans and about the other animals. I agree with him.

Daemon
Thats a really stupid argument often trotted out on animal threads.

Once and for all. Human rights and animal rights are not mutually exclusive. Caring about animals does not preclude you caring about people at the same time. It is illogical to think so.

You can care about both in parallel. In fact the people I see taking action on human rights are often the very same people expressing distaste for the cruel treatment meted out to animals. If you are a caring person capable of empathy then it is unlikely to stop at just one species or issue.

A conscience and a good moral compass generally gets applied to injustices of all kinds that the person sees in the world, both towards animals and towards other human beings.

The question should be, why can't you care about animals as well as humans? is there something wrong with you? How can you be so selectively callous and insensitive.

No one is born a cock fighter. A great deal of desensitisation is required for someone to engage in the despicable act of training or watching two magnificent, intelligent creatures injure each other to the point of death. Instilling that desensitisation in young people is yet another act of gross injustice. Cock fighting is an extremely cruel and violent activity. It is associated with a multiplicity of other human problems that occur alongside it such as drug abuse and prostitution. It is not an activity that pertains to liberated male birds who have the space to escape once domination has been established. It is an activity that reflects human depravity, mirrors our own social and cultural deficits, and the violence of this crime against life resides entirely with the humans who organise and participate in it. The Gardai would do well to spend their time addressing it for the sake of the crimes against humans that cock fighting is associated with, but most importantly to ensure that the innocent birds trapped in this horror are taken safely to animal sanctuaries.
