Seoladh leabhair: 'Mícheál Ó Mealláin'

category dublin | history and heritage | event notice author Tuesday November 13, 2012 13:10author by Coiscéim Report this post to the editors

Seolfar
MÍCHEÁL Ó MEALLÁIN
le Séamus Ó Mealláin
i gClub Chonradh na Gaeilge, 6 Sráid Fhearchair, Baile Átha Cliath
Déardaoin 22 Samhain ag 8 pm

Ba é Mícheál Ó Mealláin ceann foirne Arm Cathartha na hÉireann, agus bhí sé i gceannas ar a gcuid fórsaí i gceantar Fhaiche Stiabhna in éirí amach na Cásca. Cuireadh chun báis dá bharr é 8 Bealtaine 1916. Ainneoin an seasamh tábhachtach sin a bheith aige san éirí amach agus san obair a thug i gcrích é, is beag a bhí ar eolas coiteann faoi go dtí le deireanas.

Scríobh a mhac Séamus sraith altanna faoi shaol a athar i 1966. Caitheann na haltanna seo solas ar an iliomad gnéithe de Mhícheál Ó Mealláin, ina measc buneolas ar shonraí a bheatha. Is foinse riachtanach i gcónaí iad le eolas a chur ar an Meallánach ildánach agus na himeachtaí éagsúla a raibh sé bainteach leo. Tabharfaidh athfhoilsiú na n-altanna seo léargas úr ar Mhícheál Ó Mealláin féin, ar ghluaiseachtaí an lucht oibre is an neamhspleáchais, agus ar shaol corrach a linne.

Bhí Séamus Ó Mealláin dhá bhliain déag d’aois nuair a cuireadh a athair chun báis. Throid sé féin ar an taobh poblachtach sa chogadh cathartha, agus chaith sé dhá bhliain i bpríosún dá bharr. Cháiligh sé mar innealtóir ansin, ag obair i Veiniséala agus i mBaile Átha Cliath. Chuaigh sé sa státseirbhís, agus ba é cathaoirleach Bhord Iascaigh Mhara ar feadh i bhfad. Fuair sé bás i 1982.

Seo an t-ochtú haiste sa tsraith Macallaí na Cásca, a dhéanann comóradh ar éirí amach na Cásca trí léargais don lá inniu agus feasta a bhaint as.
