The sweeping House of Commons reforms proposed by Green MP Ellie Chowns are evidence that the Mrs Dutt-Pauker types have moved from Peter Simple's columns into public life. We're in for a bumpy ride, says Sean Walsh.

Another soft sentence: Chef loses taste after unprovoked attack

category dublin | crime and justice | opinion/analysis author Thursday February 07, 2013 13:26author by anon Report this post to the editors

SPANISH chef lost his sense of taste and had his skull reinforced with screws after being struck with a golf club and wooden samurai sword in a savage street assault.

Jorge Roca (40), from Valencia in Spain, insisted he still loves Ireland and Cork despite the unprovoked attack that left him fighting for his life.
Shane Cotter (20) of Annmount Cross, Friars Walk, Cork, who has 49 previous convictions, was jailed for three years for assault causing serious harm.

''Danny O'Brien (20) of Brandon Court, Dillons Cross, Cork, who produced the golf club used by Cotter to attack Mr Roca and who has 84 previous convictions, was jailed for 18 months for violent disorder.

The Spaniard told the Irish Independent he was disappointed with the sentences. "I am not a judge. I am a chef. But that was not really very good," he said.

Cotter later told Gardai: "I wanted to do damage. I was in a temper. I wanted to kill him."

A chef had his head caved in by a thug who said he wanted to kill him.He nearly did.He survived. His skull needed 21 stitches, and he needed screws to keep his skull in place. Not only that his cheffing career is RUINED.He cannot experience the sense of taste any longer since the damage that had been done to his skull.(Unless hopefully he learns to master his sense of smell more accuarately as smell is linked to taste and is a way of telling how it would taste.)

We live in a country where a guy importing garlic gets SIX YEARS.But these guys get a suspended 3 year sentence, they only have to serve months, and will probably get out early if they display ''good behaviour''.

Justice Judge Carney, gave a man who molested and raped his own daughter for over 20 years ,5 months in jail.

A man of polish origin recently had his face splashed with acid by an asian looking man in his 30's or 40's it was reported,if he is caught,he will probably only get a few years, and a suspended sentence, and probably out on good behaviour, but i doubt he will be caught with garda stations up and down the country closing..Its just disgusting.

http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/man-tells-of-battl....html

Leniency doesn't deter crime,i have recently met a syrian woman who i was on a course with who said: ''In ireland there is no crime deterrent, people commit crime, break into houses, she had her home broken into, all they get is a few months,if the under resourced gardai are lucky to get them, and they get out to commit another crime. There is no fear, where i lived there was a fear, fear of getting your head or your hands chopped off..''

Now im not saying what she says is completely right, but we need to be looking in the direction of a strong deterrent.

Does anybody else see whats wrong with the justice system in Ireland.?
