From 1976 to 2017. And Counting...

First CABHAIR Christmas day swim held in 1976 !
The annual sponsored swim to raise funds for the family and dependants of Irish republican prisoners will , as usual , be held on Christmas day next (Monday 25th December 2017).
CABHAIR swimmers from the early days...!
CABHAIR swimmers from the early days...!

Hi!

On Christmas day next at 12 noon , sponsored swimmers will , once again , swim at least two widths each of the Grand Canal at Inchicore , Dublin , in an event which has been held since 1976!

The swim will take place beside the bridge opposite the Blackhorse Inn (Kellys) Pub , and is organised by CABHAIR , the Irish republican prisoners dependants fund organisation : music , fire , food and drink will be supplied by the organisers and all are welcome!
The 'Related Link', below, will show you that, come hail, rain or sunshine, this event seems to be unstoppable!

Thanks for reading ,
Sharon .

Hi!

Christmas Day, 2017, in Dublin, on the Grand Canal at Inchicore - constant rain, eased off now and then to a constant drizzle!
One of the five Cabhair swimmers declared that it was as wet in the water as it was at the fire afterwards - but the 'job' was done, and our spirits, although dampened (temporarily, only) remained high.
A smaller-than-usual crowd of on-lookers stayed with us for the three hours we were there, and ensured that each swimmer 'earned their keep'. A few words and pics can be had at the 'Related Link', below.

Thanks,
Sharon.

Hi!

I'm told that five swimmers have now been confirmed for this year at the Grand Canal, Inchicore, and that the usual amount of 'goodies' have been moved to storage in a venue near the swim site.
Dunno if Santa will be visiting, but a couple of mince pies and a glass of 'lemonade' will be on hand should he do so...!

Thanks,
Sharon.

Translation of that offensive public notice: Tá cosc curtha ar na cailíní. That's not from the Forty Foot or Wexford I'd be thinking.

Hi again, CN!

I think perhaps you knew the answer before you asked me, you rogue you (but I'd call you something else if you were to sponsor me)! And yes, the Polar Bear Club consists of male and female swimmers and yes, again - Cabhair has had female swimmers take to the water here and at least one pic of same was posted at the time on 'Indymedia'. Don't know how you could have missed it, CN, you being such a fan, I mean...
;-)

Thanks,
Sharon.

You've answered my question, and it's a scientific fact that still canal water (3rd Lock Inchicore, for instance) is bound to be colder than moving sea water. I can't sponsor your trip to Coney Island, Sharon. Do they have female swimmers at Christmas at the Polar Bear Club? I've seen no female swimmers in the pictures posted here over the years from Inchicore and Wexford. An feidir leis na na cailíní ar an trá dul ag snámh?

..I'll go there for the swim (if you'll finance the trip..!).

Hi CN!

Cabhair swimmers have braved the chilly elements in previous years in Wexford and New York, and are determined to do the same now (mad yokes that they are!).
I think maybe the 3rd lock in Inchicore might be the colder place, as the other two venues have 'moving' water, whereas the water in the canal is 'still' and actually 'iced over' on us before.

And my offer stands - if you'll finance the experiment (!), I'll be the guinea pig ;-) !

Thanks,
Sharon.

I see that the annual Cabhair Christmas swim is branching out, to Wexford and New York. Which is the colder place to do an outdoor swim, 3rd Lock at Inchicore or the Polar Bear Club in Coney Island?

author by Sharon. - Individualpublication date Tue Dec 19, 2017 15:50author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Hi!

I have been asked to mention that Cabhair swimmers will also be belly-flapping (!) their way to raising a few bob in Wexford, at Rosslare Strand, on Christmas Eve at 11am and a few Cabhair-supported brave-souls-with-water-wings will be taking part in the Polar Bear Club's New Year's Day Swim at Coney Island, in New York.
And I hope all is going as well for those swimmers as it is for those of us who will be in Inchicore on Christmas morning/afternoon for the Cabhair Swim that will be taking place there, at the 3rd lock, at about 12 noon on Christmas Day - the usual BIG bundle of 'goodies' has been collected and stored and is guaranteed to ruin appetites for the rest of that day!

Thanks,
Sharon.
