As a Catholic, Prof Roger Watson is sure Francis was appointed Pope for a reason. It's just that he's damned if he can figure out what it was. Certainly, it's not his liberalism that's drawn young people back to church.

A key global climate database is being fed with junk data from an RAF airbase where helicopters regularly hover over the thermometer. Why does the Met Office keep sending junk class data, asks Chris Morrison.

... is this organised by Bono's imaginary "activist friends" who are going to magically change the world by following the Killiney tosser in his campaign of "civil disobedience"?

Address & contact details as listed above.

Ahh your true cynical colours are coming out MG :) - Can't say I blame ya, but keep the faith!

... he or she is.

I doubt if Bono's tactics are going to make a significant difference in global poverty, and his accent and sunglasses are really annoying, but I've got a lot more respect for him than I do for some tosspot posting away on indymedia making sure that the pure flame of revolution stays unsullied by anything like ... you know ... action.

What have you done lately arsehole?

Fairly easy to attack someone you don't know from the anonomity of an alias, isn't it "."(not that much thought went into that one)?
Not that the previous ignorant even warrants a response but I and many other activists have a lot of respect for MG and the campaigning she's been involved in throughout the years.

I too would not like to participate in ANY event organised to make Bono feel better about himself.

This is a final comment.

The DDC post makes no mention of Bono - so why drag him into it? From where I'm standing it seems clear to me that Bono has studiously avoided any contact with campaigns such as the DDC one. Can anyone point out an instance where he has endorsed any Irish debt cancellation campaign?

I'm a "he" and we're all wankers, really, if you think about it...

I have nothing against the Debt and Development Coalition, but (in my very humble opinion) collecting signatures on a petition will make absolutely no difference to anybody.

Also, you may respect Bono, but (again in my very humble opinon) schmoozing with war criminals and greedy presidents only serves to boost their public image and get them re-elected the next time around. If he really wanted to affect change, he should try to get the scumbags he hangs around with replaced by decent human beings.

Oh, and Sean, I think you mixed me up with someone else, but thanks for the (unwarranted) praise nonetheless...

MG: I understand your schepticism, but in fact the evidence is very clear the debt relief that has been given - while it may be little more than throwing a few crumbs - has made a a very real difference for some of the poorest people on the planet. There is a momentum here that needs to be build on.

Also, this is a campaign that is capable of engaging a lot of people that wouldn't otherwise get involved in this kind of global politics. And look how far it has come - its no longer about debt "forgiveness" its about social justice, its about "don't owe, won't pay" and the notion of odious debt. People are also starting to make the link between the dependancy of countries due to debt, and the way the World Bank, IMF and WTO have forced these a disastrous neoliberal agenda onto so many African countries.

Wish I could be there on Saturday.
