Anti Bin Tax Demo City Hall, Dame Street. 6.30 pm.

category dublin | bin tax / household tax / water tax | press release author Monday September 01, 2003 16:06author by pat c Report this post to the editors

Anti Bin Tax Protest will take place this Monday 1st September at 6.30pm outside City Hall, Dame Street. The protest is in response to the City Managers attempt to intimidate those who have refused to pay the charges. A huge volume of letters has been sent over the last number of weeks threatening court action and non-collection of household waste.

Turn up and show your opposition. Dont let them get away with double taxation.

A large noise picket is a good way of getting the message across. Postering has taken place across the City and has helped to allay peoples fears.

from the packaging and the distribution of the packaging. If Ireland as a society wishes to discouraged the volume of waste then charging every supermarket and manufacturer a levy based on their packaging will discourage it. This might very well be passed on to the consumer in increased prices however. Something has got to give and I don't see why it should be the salaries of hard-working families that are already paying for waste disposal. ( I just finished a hike on the Wicklow Way during which I picked up rubbish littering the trail and ended up with two bags of coke cans, crisp packets and energy drink bottles. Makes me wonder why the "outdoors enthusiasts" didn't stay at home in their own filth).

Yes, the campaign is single issue, but the website (see related link) has some stuff about recycling etc.

That big discussion on "polluter pays" principle on Indymedia can be found at:
http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=60592

It should cover most of your questions.

This keeps cropping up. The argument has been hashed out 100 times. This campaign is a single issue one.

If you want to set up a campaign along the lines you have suggested then go ahead.

I agree that double-taxation is wrong, so how do we incorporate the "polluter pays" principle into our single-taxation system? Surely the easiest way is that everyone pays a flat basic rate and then those with additional rubbish pay by the bin. Would you agree that this is not double-taxation?
