The power outage in Spain and Portugal wasn't caused by extreme weather, but by an over-reliance on wind and solar. If the UK continues on its headlong path to Net Zero, we can expect similar failures.

Why do we fail to deport those whom we should deport? It's due in the end, says Dr David McGrogan, to an excess of pity. We are pitying ourselves into disorder and social decay. We need to be willing not to be nice.

WCA Posters Target Bertie

category dublin | bin tax / household tax / water tax | press release author Friday October 10, 2003 19:38author by WCA - Working Class Actionauthor email workingclassaction at eircom dot netauthor address c/o PO Box 3355, Dublin 7 Report this post to the editors

Press Release - 10th October 2003

Press Release on poster launch

Working Class Action (WCA) today launched a new poster highlighting the policies and anti-working class record of the Fianna Fail party. The poster will be unveiled tomorrow at the Anti-Bin Tax rally from Parnell Square to Mounjoy Jail.

The 3,000 posters, which directly target Bertie Ahern for this recent statement describing working class communities as ‘spongers’, will be erected across North Dublin in the coming week. They describe Fianna Fail as "criminal, drink driving, tax cheats."

The WCA poster also points out recent price rises for basic services, which impact directly on ordinary workers who already pay PAYE tax and PRSI. Since the last election these include:

VHI increased by 44%
ESB increased by 13.5%
Eircom bills increased by 6.3%
Bus Fares increased by 9%
TV licence increased by 40%

WCA spokesperson and East Wall activist Joe Mooney said " It is obvious that the main function of the highest levels of government is to protect the interests of the very rich. Bertie Ahern - the tribunal-dodging Taoiseach – is directly complicit in this, he protects the finances of tax dodgers like Charlie Haughey, Ray Burke and Liam Lawlor as well as the interests of well heeled speculators making massive profits off the desperation of young couples seeking a basic small house in which to live."

The WCA poster campaign is part of the group’s ongoing campaign to expose Fianna Fail in working class areas. Last year the group leafleted Dublin Central calling on voters not to elect Dermot Fitzpatrick, Bertie’s running mate. Fitzpatrick finally scraped into the Dail by just 74 votes.

Cabra activist Cieran Perry said
"The anger of people in our communities about the jailing of 12 anti-bin tax residents is very real and strong. Ordinary non-political people have turned out in large numbers to support the campaign. They realise now that effective opposition to unjust government policies result in the rapidly jailing of working class protestors. The lies, hypocrisy and cod ‘concern’ of Fianna Fail for our people and areas will not wash any more. Blame for the draconian clamp down on community action must be laid where it belongs – at the door of Fianna Fail and a Taoiseach who has the brazen cheek to claim he ‘represents’ the people of Dublin Central".

Just got more detailed updated figures on ESB price rises.

2001 8.6%
2002 9.85%
2003 5% (proposed)

So that is actually 24% in the past 3 years.

The rate of inflation at present is 2.9%.

We were working with the most accuarate figures we had early last week. Then better ones come along .....grrrrrr!
