Political poetry in local wonderland

The following poem appeared like a light of hope and reality in last Thursday’s Anglo Celt, a conservative Cavan based newspaper. The author, ‘Rhymin’ Simon’ provides a weekly platter of poetry and medicine to those of us who just don’t identify with the usual Fianna Fail shite that local Ireland is forced to digest. All hail Rhymin’ Simon and remember: the smallest candle can drown out all the darkness in the world. Now – get localising!

=================================================
The Taoiseach on the Dunphy Show – the nation held it’s breath
This would be an interview we never would forget
He’d put him through the grinder – make old Bertie sweat
The flames, they would be hopping out of the TV set

He’d ask him why we squandered the cards that we were dealt
What the hell happened our country’s new found wealth?
Why are there such problems in transport and in health?
And a cost-of living surge that all of us have felt

Oh yes, good old Eamon would get down to the nitty-gritty
Like why does it take hours to get around the city?
And where’s this massive stadium we were building from the kitty?
Have we spent it on tribunals and special sub-committees?

The cancer of corruption would have to be explored
The unemployment nightmare that we’re hurtling toward
The crazy cost of houses that no-one can afford
Yes, at last a chance for Dunphy to get Bertie to the sword…

But instead we watched a love-in, a comfy little chat
Like a pair of long-lost brothers chewing on the fat
All that they were missing were the cigars and the cravats
I never thought I’d say this, but I might go back to Pat!
