The Right has spent much of the last decade railing against cancel culture, and was arguably winning the debate. It would be a mistake to abandon that position now.

global indymedia network project for world social forum in jan 2004

category international | arts and media | opinion/analysis author Tuesday December 02, 2003 11:46author by dunk - FUSPEYauthor email duncancrowley at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

a new year, new experiment

indymedia
can it be improved
yes
global indymedia network
global indymedia network

the website is good, its already used by many.
could more use it, more groups and networks working for global justice and sustainability use it.
how much do they use it at present?
http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=62491
is an example of this- a feedback talk last saturday about
WTO and cancun etc, not posted on indymedia- does trade metter?

outreach and publicity of indymedia,
pressure was put on indymedia to "open up a bit" move away from just being a website
they did, thankfully.
1 open get together in stags head 3 weeks ago.
another one was publicised and it did not happen, no one commented on why it dident happen, people went, they want to know whats going on, they want to be informed, they want to get invovled
what is the story
http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=62310

the world social forum is happening in january in mumbai in india.
social forum and indymedia are the 2 open, non hierarchial processes which are changing the world in a fundamentally new way.
it is the - network age- things are changing
http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=29627&search_text=the%20rise%20of%20open%20source is a very good article after feb 15th, the largest ever organised protest in recorded world history
can we do more
is it possible for the 150 or so already existing indymedia nodes to work on a global project together, whereby live webstreams can be set up so that those of us who want to go to mumbai but physically cant, can still participate in the process;
using the real and the virtual together
live streams and web conferencing.

its already a tool used by a lot in the business world, lets start using, embracing, working with, pushing the boundaries of technology.
what would happen if we did?
a friend of mine set up a concert for paddys day some years back, gigs in paris, dublin, boston all interacted together in real time- played music with each other.
it is possible

as an experiment in this, i am trying to get this play- May Our Faces Haunt You -
http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=62490
beamed out during the WSF.
id really appreciate support and help from IMC-IE

can we please meet up in the physical world either this wednesday or sometime soon, so we can share ideas and come up with new ones.

the world is changing rapidly-
i hope people see that we are making a differnece, but that with a little more effort we can be a lot more effective
thanks anyay for all thats here already

this talk on next week should help
http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=62503

so too might
http://www.thedigitalhub.com/
the digital hub, new initiave to make area @ guinness a new leader in teknology in the world

the "burn the irish bar" crew who went to arizonas "burning man festival" said they are on for getting involved,
burning man festival is perhaps one of the most amazing festivals in the world
http://www.burntheirishbar.com

my point- its great if you can get there, if you do go its good to bring back that spirit and energy and try to get things going here which are of that intensity.
why not?

i have talked with some of the imc-ireland team about this project
ive talked with davie in convergence, they are planning to do a project like this for their festival @ april/may. so they are already going through the process of making it happen
ive contacted indymedia-global, via email, and put out the idea and asked if there is already something like this planned
ive emailed WSF india team, indymedia mumbai and indymedia india
ill try to contact the irish social forum team to see what they think

perhaps cultivate could be the place where we could "link up" with WSF.
seeing as there would be a massive time difference, perhaps we could explore the social bit a little further.
someone was mentioning a fe hot whiskies and some music????

what do ye think?

author by dunkpublication date Wed Mar 10, 2004 19:36author address author phone Report this post to the editors

im still on for doing this project-
i went to imc tek meeting and they did not seem to think that this was a good idea.

to be honest i think we/you are as ineffective because we are not playing with stuff.

in the future it will be the norm

certain things change the world
indymedia is already one of those
but it can do far more
