Up to 260 jobs may go at Shannon

And it has nothing to do with Anti-War protests

Ah good ol' Capitalism.

Up to 260 jobs may be lost at Shannon Airport under a cost-cutting scheme being considered by the board of the Dublin Airport Authority today.

It is understood that an opening position paper is being presented to the board, which proposes that the company commence a consultation process on job cuts and outsourcing of certain operations.

While the Dublin Airport Authority has not commented on the matter, the board is expected to approve the opening of a consultation process.

Some reports have suggested that up the half the jobs at Shannon could be eliminated.

However, unions are likely to mount a vehement campaign of opposition to any job cuts.

They argue that the State Airports Act of 2004, which splits the former Aer Rianta into three separate airport authorities at Dublin Cork and Shannon, guarantees their jobs, terms and conditions by law.

However, the company believes that a consultation process on cost-cutting does not breach the act, as any changes introduced would be through agreed procedures, and any redundancies would be voluntary.

Yes, good old capitalism indeed. Since Ireland fully adopted capitalism in the early 1990s, a net total of 700,000 jobs have been created in Ireland. Show me a socialist country that can match that. Job cuts such as those at Shannon are not because of falling passenger numbers - but to improve productivity and efficiency. The net result will be an increase in jobs elsewhere in the Shannon areas as Shannon attracts more flights. Indeed, Ryanair have allready announced they are setting up a base there. Instead of whining, I'd advise you to build a hotel in the Shannon area, as there will now be a flood of tourists there in the next couple of years. Sometimes I get the distinct impression that people on this site don't understand how capitalism works. But, it does you know, better than any other system ever tried.
