New approach to law enforcement

category national | crime and justice | news report author Wednesday December 14, 2005 18:11author by True Believer Report this post to the editors

Government asks for your help

Minister tries his best to figure why torture convention complaints not investigated. You have an opportunity to assist.

Yesterday's Irish Times has a Government advertisement inviting the public to send in submissions to assist the Government in completing its mandatory report to the UN on how Ireland is implementing the UN Convention against Torture.

In case you need any inspiration here is the latest on the Dail record today from Minister Dermot Ahern in answer to Micheal D Higgins TD.

..............

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern, has said any hard evidence that prisoners are being transferred by the US through Shannon would be investigated by the gardaí.

Mr Ahern said the gardaí and the Director of Public Prosecutions are the only ones who can enforce the law in Ireland.

The Labour spokesman on Foreign Affairs, Michael D Higgins, said the DPP had not acted on two complaints on this issue.

Mr Ahern said he suspects this was due to a lack of evidence.
