Reform is favourite to win the Runcorn and Helsby by-election, overturning Labour's 14,700 majority. Why? It might have something to do with having the nation's third-highest number of asylum seekers, says Steven Tucker.

Pandemic Threat Transmitted by Eating Chickens, Turkeys and Eggs Prompts PETA to Say, 'Stay Away From Poultry Like It's the Plague'

Dublin, Ireland - Lying naked in flower-decorated coffins, PETA members will be on display on Friday to remind consumers that an addiction to poultry could lead to a bird flu pandemic. Activists will carry placards reading, "Bird Flu Kills: Go Vegetarian":

Date: Wednesday, 15 March
Time: 12 noon sharp
Place: Henry Street, (Opposite Spire)

Avian influenza, or "bird flu", threatens humanity with what could easily be the greatest public health crisis in recorded history. Experts warn that the disease could kill one in eight human beings and cause a collapse of the world economy. Outbreaks of various strains of bird flu are regularly detected, and according to Scotland's former chief medical officer, Dr Mac Armstrong, between 5,000 and 50,000 people in Scotland could die from bird flu. Bird flu can be caught simply by eating undercooked meat or eggs, by eating undercooked food prepared on the same cutting board as infected meat or eggs or even by touching eggshells that are contaminated with the disease.

"It's pay-back time, with avian flu now showing up as a direct consequence of a very sick and cruel industry", says PETA campaigner Anita Singh. "With diseases running rampant in crowded, filthy factory farms, not to mention the known link between meat-eating and heart disease, the safest thing to do with chicken flesh is to avoid it like it's the plague."

One factory-farm chicken or turkey shed houses tens of thousands of birds who are constantly kept cooped up in their own filth, allowing diseases to spread quickly amongst them. Laying hens are kept in stacked cages so that faeces from the birds on top fall on the birds below. The problem is not restricted to birds: Factory-farmed pigs and dairy cows, who live in similar intensively-crowded and unsanitary conditions, can also get and spread this or similar viruses.

Factory farming is cruel abhorrent and unnecessary, produces poor quality foods containing harmful residues and aids in the spread of disease. its all about big profits and the disenfranchising of small farmers who tend to produce better food locally and give a reasonable quality of life to their stock.

Whats wrong with having compassion for all living creatures?. In my opinion this ability to empathise with the suffering of others (animals included) is the only thing that makes us in any way different from the majority of other wild animals. Seems a shame to have this one special quality and then to piss it away for a big mac and some chicken mcnuggets as you suggest ron. Says a lot about you as a person.

Those of you with a little more compassion than ron should visit http://www.ciwf.ie/

Cooking does kill the flu - samonella is cause by poor cooking also.

But you don't have to take my word for it - look it up on google.

Humans have hunted and killed animals for food for hundreds of thousands of years and we have farmed animals for tens of thousands of years.

PETA are a bunch of deranged lunatics - they hate human beings - firstly they hate themselves by becoming vegetarians and denying themselves the exquisite pleasure of eating meat almost like an agency monastic sect who denied themselves the physical pleasures because they saw blood as corruption. Then they want to enforce their own hatred of human beings upon the rest of the world. What the hell exactly is wrong with farming animals, eating them, wearing their fur, hunting, vivisection or religious sacrifice? We are not harming human beings, our species, but living life at one with nature - we build cities, factories, farms, conquer the oceans and outer space because as a species that is what we do - we follow our instincts and we eat meat too.
Non human animals are sentient but a monkey for instance looking at himself in a mirror just sees another monkey - he doesn't recognise himself - non-human animals are not capable of human love or emotions nor do they have human personalities nor can they formulate philsophy or politics or civilisations these people are giving human charachteristics to animals which they just don't have.
Now simians such as gorillas and chimps are closest to humans but that should not stop Africans from hunting and eating them or scientists for experimenting on them in order to discover ways of threating human disases due the similarity in their physiology to humans.
But I also find it truly bizarre that a human embryo, consisting of a clutch of cells stored in liquid nitrogen, arouses more emotion than the fate of an ape in a laboratory.

cooking does not kill the virus. some of those who have died did so from eating infected cooked fowl. you can get samonella from a cooked chicken.

i 'm not defending cuddly chickens here, i must confess to being a carnivore. just intent on preserving public health.

Aren't PETA being a little disingenuous here. After all cooking removes the danger of the virus, therefore they are being dishonest by claiming that eating poultry will give you bird flu.

It would give the organisation more credibility if they didnt bullshit the public.
