158 academics have signed a letter calling for NATO to admit Ukraine. But they don't address the crucial question of when Ukraine should be admitted: now, or once the war is over. Neither option is straightforward.

The hunger strike did them no favours - for one it harmed them physically and secondly and this is most important, it alienated the legal authorities. A group of people who are prepared to harm themselves and indeed one who claims to have harmed others in another country before arriving in this jurisdiction are hardly good candidates for membership of society - they already have enough difficulties with native born citizens and habitual criminals who populate our prisons.

The vast majority of our immigrants and asylum seekers are fleeing economic hardship and civil disorder in their countries of origin and once they arrive here they join our workforce, obey our laws and become productive happy citizens fully integrated into our society.

This process must be controlled by the state - we cannot allow foreigners to enter our nation at will.
That would make a laughing stock of our system of democratic government and law and order.

It is not racist to prosecute fanatical extremists such as these Afghans led by aided sinister secretive anti-democratic forces who seek to overthrow our state and create civil disorder.

I wish these Afghans the best of luck.

Because the Irish people haven't elected Joe Higgins as Taoiseach?

'The hunger strike did them no favours'

You would have never heard of these afghans otherwise.

'for one it harmed them physically and secondly and this is most important'

If you are so concerned about their physical well being then you should oppose them being deported into a war zone

'The vast majority of our immigrants and asylum seekers are fleeing economic hardship and civil disorder in their countries of origin and once they arrive here they join our workforce, obey our laws and become productive happy citizens fully integrated into our society. '

RP - you're factually wrong, as usual. Asylum Seekers cannot work, they are not allowed. Plus, most immigrants to Ireland from other EU countries and most of those are not seeking to become 'happy citizens.'

'...we cannot allow foreigners to enter our nation at will....'

Again, foreigners do all the time - its called the European Union, get used to it.

'It is not racist to prosecute fanatical extremists such as these Afghans'

I am really curious how to what you really know of these men's religious beliefs - extreme? moderate? whatever. If you mention the Indo as a source....

'...led by aided sinister secretive anti-democratic forces who seek to overthrow our state and create civil disorder.'

Source?! Based on what?! These people engaged in non-violent civil disobedience, period. No one was overthowing the state and the civil disorder was from the people that support your position. You don't have to agree with them to recognise that they were non-violent in their methods of gaining attention for their issue.

Ireland is not a democracy because most people don't practise basic citizenship. That has been long forsaken for consumerism as the basis of identitiy.

Free speech use it or lose it.
