158 academics have signed a letter calling for NATO to admit Ukraine. But they don't address the crucial question of when Ukraine should be admitted: now, or once the war is over. Neither option is straightforward.

Yes Topper, the muppets are those in Damascus with Assad's hand up their arses. I avoid using the word hypocrite, for some reason a lot of people feel they must wear their heart on their sleeve, and to be called a hypocrite is little better than to be called a traitor. I was being a little cheeky, as I see Mary Lou keen to be seen to support PC causes.

I think that people in Ireland should enjoy their peace and what summer they can, here it sunny and hot, but there is far too much metal in the air for enjoyment.

Oh, just read over the first post, if I'm reading it correctly now the term "muppet" refers to demonstrators in Damascus, not Dublin. Not very clear though. But it still suggests that Mary Lou or anyone else in Ireland who supports the Palestinians is a hypocrite unless they organise a similar protest against the Syrian regime, which is a complete non sequitor

Nope, still no connection. You posted a comment abusing (not merely criticising, but abusing) people who took part in a demonstration in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, on the grounds that human rights abuses are taking place in Syria. You haven't been able to justify this (by the same logic, if someone protests against the Syrian regime without also organising a protest against the Israeli government, they are hypocrites, or maybe even "muppets").

You are doing your best to imply that Palestinian resistance to the occupation is being orchestrated by Damascus, but not succeeding because it is so obviously absurd - when the IDF is blowing civilians to bits, it doesn't take any string-pulling from the Syrians to provoke a Palestinian response. As I said, you're losing credibility fast with stuff like this.

Here are the contact details for the Irish Ambassador to Israel.

His excellency Mr Michael Forbes in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Anyone could write him a letter expressing their outrage at the destruction of Gaza and the Collective Punishment of the 1.5 million citizens living there. He could be reminded that the Civilian population of Ireland is watching the actions of his offices with intense urgency. That we expect to hear a call for the human rights abuse to stop. That we expect the Ambassador to pressure the Israeli Government to live up to it's obligations under International law. That we want to see action in terms of political and economic sanctions to be implemented and the withdrawal of diplomatic connections if the mass murder continues.
We could remind the Amabassador that he is our representative to the Israeli Government and that silence on these grave issues is a negation of his duties to represent our sympathy with the Palestinian people in the strongest possible terms to the Israeli leadership.
A letter in written form, politely worded and posted to his offices would be the most effective medium for getting his attention.

By the way Topper, on Monday I said;

1.The connection is that the poor Palestinians are used by everyone out here. At the moment you have Assad making noises about retrieving the Golan, which would undoubtedly involve Hizbollah, and lead to massive destruction in Lebanon, whose government would falter, only to be 'rescued' once more by the Syrians. Mix in a few Palestinian groups such as Islamic Jihad and soon the Iraelis are faced with the problem of invading Lebanon again. Eyes off Syria and Iran, on we all go.

Turn on CNN Topper. Maybe you'll find them more credible.

"Nope Cat, I'm afraid that's not an argument. You're losing credibility fast with silly rhetoric of that sort. The fact that you have to resort to abuse ("muppet", "moron") says it all really."

Topper, I was asked for a connection, not an argument. If you cannot see the link between the actions of Syria, Israel, Hizbollah and Hamas...

Oh God. I was hoping you could manage this one on you own, but okay David L., let us do it by the numbers.

Your second question attempts to put words in my mouth, and just shows your own ignorance.

2. No. I may have nine lives but I amn't a moron.

3. The difference between a puppet and a muppet is that a puppet comes with strings attached, while a muppet walks about with his hand up his hole.

And Tank Girl, nice try, but you brought up Damascus first!

There's a few questions that inevitably spring to mind when I see such comments as the one above.

1. What's the connection? Is the author really affronted by the denial of human rights in Syria, or just using it as a stick to attack Palestinians, because in his mind they're like, you know, all Arabs.

2. Is the author going to help organise a demonstration/event supporting human rights in Syria? (kind of linked to question 1)

3. Can the word 'muppet' be outlawed at this stage

PS. Nice photos

While thousands of government muppets marched in support of the Gaza Palestinians yesterday, elsewhere in Damascus the offices of the Human Rights Association in Syria (HRAS) were attacked .

"The windows of the offices were smashed and the doors were smeared with animal excrement," the group said in a statement on Monday. It said the offices belong to a former HRAS chairman, lawyer Hayssam Maleh, and were being used as the group's temporary headquarters. "The association feels targeted by their act of aggression, as does lawyer Maleh, and calls on the Syrian authorities to launch an investigation and punish the culprits according to the law," it said.

Imagine this happening in Damascus, where the govenment is visible every 50m in Damascus, in the form of a Mukhabarat cop.

Mary Lou, get out there!
