The murder of children in Southport on Monday was horrific, and the riot the following day was outrageous. There are serious questions to be asked about the chaos in Britain and they must not be censored, says Claire Fox.

158 academics have signed a letter calling for NATO to admit Ukraine. But they don't address the crucial question of when Ukraine should be admitted: now, or once the war is over. Neither option is straightforward.

Shell to Sea raise money, raise awareness at the All-Ireland Semi-Final

category national | environment | news report author Sunday August 06, 2006 17:36author by Shell to Seaauthor email dublinshelltosea at gmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Great response for Cork and Waterford Fans

Shell to Sea went among the crowds attending the All-Ireland Semi Final between Waterford and Cork today, asking for donations and giving out leaflets, information on the campaign, and the ubiquitous Shell to Sea stickers.

The response amongst the sports fans was overwhelmingly positive, and the large amnounts of money raised will go towards more leaflets, protests and public meetings in the future.

Latest reports sugges that Shell will attempt to start building work at their proposed refinery site Bellinaboy at the end of thiis month or iin early September, using the confusion sown by their recent announcement that they are to "re-route" the pipeline to give them an advantage over the resistance networks around the country who will be trying to galvanise protests against them.

This means that Shell to Sea have a month to alert the public that the "re-route" is an empty public relations exercise, and the root of the problem, like the route of the pipeline, hasn't changed.

This is what Shell's external affairs department said when a reporter asked them to give details about the new scheme:

QUESTION: Today's press release and the RTE reports make no mention of where the pipeline is going to move to or how far it might move. Is it going to move a few metres to one side or is going to go along a completely different route?

SHELL: The first thing is, Peter Cassells' report last week recommended that we move it within the vicinity of Rossport to address the specific concerns around proximity to housing and they are the recommendations that we've said we'll accept, so it is within the vicinity of the Rossport area.
