158 academics have signed a letter calling for NATO to admit Ukraine. But they don't address the crucial question of when Ukraine should be admitted: now, or once the war is over. Neither option is straightforward.

Suppport for Tara Solidarity Vigil Light Gets Stronger

category dublin | environment | news report author Tuesday September 19, 2006 18:14author by Dave Donnellanauthor email contact at tarasolidarityvigil dot net Report this post to the editors

Vigil Light is Focus of Opposition

Despite repeated attempts by the Office of Public Works (OPW) to move them on the Tara Solidarity Vigil remain camped out on the Hill of Tara. They have become a focus of opposition to plans to build a new motorway (M3) through the Tara valley. As opposition grows they have received increasing messages of support not just from Ireland but around the world also. Norwegians, in particular, have taken a keen interest in developments on the Hill due to a sense of shared history they have with Ireland.

If you would like to visit them they are tucked discretely away in the trees below Rath Graine and would appreciate your support. Also as the date for the construction of the motorway gets nearer they will be developing a website to get keep people infomred of developments. If you have any material you think is relevant to the Hill of Tara and the campaign against the new motorway please forward it to the following email address: contact@tarasolidarityvigil.net

The number of tokens left on these trees around the Hill of Tara suggest belief in their healing power is still strong in some quarters. The belief is that the illness can be left behind on these tokens. Members of the camp expressed concern however that too many tokens, particularly coins pressed into the crevices of the tree could be damaging and urged people not to damage the trees with this ritual.

Greetings,

I look forward to future updates on the Tara Vigil and am very glad that the Norwegians are giving support. I am hoping to raise awareness and support amongst the Irish in my own city. Are these images copyright or may I print them out to create a folder of images to show people what is going on in Tara?

cheers, Robyn

Lovely images there of the natural beauty which helps makes the area such a special place and inspired so many cultures over the millenia. All the more reason to fight the current culture of greed and corruption which threatens its very existance.

No doubt the vigil fire plays a very important role in the protection of our archaeological heritage . But the fire alone will not stop the government thugs from forcing the motorway through the Gabhra Valley. I believe a camp needs to be set up on or very close to the actual route of the proposed motorway, with the view of fortifying the area with all sorts of gadgets (Treehouses, lock-ons, etc) which will slow down and disrupt the construction of the motorway at least to some degree.

Coins and other copper-objects pushed into crevices in trees can do a considerable amount of damage, even kill the tree. I can only urge people using the area for recreational purposes, to remove those objects. The same goes for the copper coins thrown into the holy well I notice every time I am up there. People depend on that well as source for drinking water, therefore it should not be polluted with metal objects. Surely there must be a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way to honour the land and the elements than using coins minted from cheap and inferior metal? Apart from this, money does not represent the spirit of nature, but rather the spirit of exploitation of the land, and therefore the very forces we are fighting against.

Hope the storm last night didn't do too much damage, if any. Hi Dan, hope you're well and everyone else too. Rock on.

Leaving coins at wells, trees, lakes etc has been common practice in Ireland and beyond for centuries. The im holier than you approach wont endear you to anyone.
