158 academics have signed a letter calling for NATO to admit Ukraine. But they don't address the crucial question of when Ukraine should be admitted: now, or once the war is over. Neither option is straightforward.

RTE spreading the muck for Shell

category mayo | environment | news report author Tuesday October 03, 2006 22:18author by John Kelly - CFSD Report this post to the editors

Interviews men working on site and no other view is sought !

RTE radio interviewed men who were "glad" to be starting work today at the controversial Shell site in North Mayo. No alternative views were sought by the state broadcaster.

At 13.35 RTE radio one announced on their "News at One" bulletin that they were "going to the west now" to cover the "latest developments" in the Shell saga. They proceeded to interview people who were working on the site and who were "glad" to be doing so. They also interviewed a spokesman for Shell. No one who was protesting was interviewed. I lodged a complaint. This is going to become the norm if they are allowed to get away with it, they have a remit to produced balanced coverage of issues, especially issues of controversy.

I would suggest to all concerned to email the editor at : newsdesk@rte.ie Phone 2082177 and also write to the Director General of RTE and perhaps ask him are his editors operating under a directive from Government in realtion to coverage of this story ? It is vital to keep up the pressure on the "National Broadcaster" to carry out it duties impartially. "Information is power" and well the Government and Shell know it.

Watch PT last week meant to write on this, http://dynamic.rte.ie/av/230-2179679.smil

Mark Garavan is very good, was very clear on this show.
Prime TIme stick with the One Visit Peter Cassells.

Miriam and PT tries to play dumb and pretend she doesn't know exactly what the 'Shell to Sea' campaign means. This is classic RTE 'reporting' perhaps they are saying they are only voicing the thoughts of the genreal public but do they really think the public are that stupid it must be such strain on them in the newsroom to misreport things so much..
The problem has always been the terminal, the pipeline was only placed near the Rossportters homes because it needed to get to an inland terminal.

Miriam says (forcefully near, factually to her) several times that its only a small number of people wanting to stop the terminal then totally contradicts herself by using a Poll thats details 60% against the current type of developement as an arguement to John Egan. Can she be that dumb?

Apparently the boys from Prime Time have rolled into town but before they arrived, the Gardai for the first time in 3 days removed alot of their own crowd barriers and other parafunalia with which they've put down and intimidated peacefull protestors with - Great how things work in this country isn't it!!

By contrast Raidió na Gaeltachta were quick to cover the protestor's side of the story and gave one of their representatives plenty of airtime.

Don't ignore RnaG, it is one of the country's best news sources.

Touche Supp. My apologies to the newsdesk and RTE on that one, I missed that section, no excuses. They did indeed cover the demonstrators. N Talk were truly bad and they should be up there in the hall of shame big time, digging and spreading for Shell. I still have serious issues with RTE but on this one, I concede I was wrong.

Shell last year sold all their filling stations in Ireland to a company called Topaz ltd - So you are not actually a Shell worker at all!.

However if you are good at telling lies with a straight face and making racist comments, Shell PR would be only too delighted to employ you - Send your details to one John Egan ,Side-Street, Bagor Erris, Co, Mayo or alternativly you send it Smithers, I mean John Egan at the Pyle residence, Cromwell imperial mansion, buckingshire,uk. If you call in person he'll be the one wearing the very tight page-boy outfit!!

As the previous commentator rightly pointed out many in the area worked in England for a time, but this TV3 News coverage is another illustration of the way the corporate media -And TV3 IS part of the corporate media -the way they work to distort the picture and slant it in the favour of their own, is that they decide to selectively air such snippets to completely discredit those against Shell.

Whilst the original statement above may be wrong that RTE did not cover or interview any of the dissenting voices, what matters often is who they cover/interview in the first few mins and most importantly on the most listened segements of the day.

So for example, if say on the main lunchtime news and the 6pm news, in the first few minutes, they give coverage to Shell or their supporters, then from a propaganda point of view that these are the most important times and is very strategic, because you can be sure the biggest audiences listen at these times. Also it is well known that when you are new to any subject or story, it is the first impressions that stick and it takes a lot of effort to overturn them. Therefore, by hearing Shell representatives speak first, then this is most likely to stick. It is also well known that people tend to be most attentive for the first few minutes.

For example, if you are have listening and at the start the newsreader lists out 4 or 5 items coming up, you will be attentive to each in the first few opening lines which you will use to determine whether to continue paying attention or just wait for the next item you are waiting for. So if you hear someone from Shell saying something to the effect of: Those NIMBYs are at it again, you will -if you have little knowledge of the situation, be primed with this, and then tend to switch off, probably because it comes across as negative and they (Shell) of course seem to be the victim. Therefore you are less likely to wait around or pay any attention to the opposing view when it comes up later in the segment.. In the case of TV, it's likely you might channel hop while waiting for this part to complete. I know that I do this all the time when trying to skip over stories that don't interest me.

The same effect can be seen in newspaper articles where the headlines often contradict what the article says. Frequently the opening paragraph will support the headline, but later on, on reading the full thing you realize it doesn't really, although you at that stage are fighting the contradiction and in order to resolve it may go along with the initial suggestion made by the headline.

Anyway getting back to the main point of the article and RTE's coverage, if they then carry interviews of opposing views at other times of the day, say 3pm or 7am, it matters little, because few people are listening then. Yet and most importantly, they can always point to this as evidence when they haven't really, given the above. This is true for other national media in every other country too.

So as comedians would say, it's not what you say but how you say it and I would add when you say it.

Brendan Philibin, Mary Corduff and were interviewed Willie Corduff. I think atleast.

I hope you write a retraction here and to the newsdesk, there are plenty of things you could say about RTE coverage but not the no disenter was interviewed. The normalisation of what happened today. I wish people like yourself and Sean Ryan would correct themselves when they make completely wrong statements.

Now Newstalk 106 FM has gone 'national' maybe folks across the country would like to call their number, and ask some questions about todays George Hook show and its contining appaulingly biased coverage of recent events at Ballinaboy.

1. Why was shell spokesmans John Egan given free airtime without any challenging questions from Hook. eg How much has Shell, and its front organisations, pay into the coffers of Fianna Fail over the past ten years.

2. Why was there not at least one other voice putting the side of Rossport residents

Their number is 1890 946 106

There were 4 extra Gardaí sent to Moyross (close to 5 thousand people there) to help protect them from being murdered, raped, robbed or burnt out (or all four).

I guess the people of Moyross didn't buy the right politician.

Maybe it's not too late to exchange Willie O'Dea?

Maybe it's easier to kick the shite out of a bunch of people sitting on the road saying the Rosary than it is to tackle someone who might hit back.

All in all though, I think the good citizens of this country are close to having enough shite thrown at them by the Regime. Maybe RTE ought to look to its own future too.

Don't buy the license - it's extortion - and it only encourages the fuckers.

The ghost from valley Rossport

Information IS power and not so well that most of the People don't know it.
The sooner the better the People of this Counrty realise hat the Media are bought and sold just as the Government and Judiciary , by Business.

This Country has progressed silently into a Police State , the visual evidence if which can be seen at Rossport today.
We now have a CURFEW SITUATION beginning to emerge in Mayo with tooled up battle Gardai ready to carry out their master's wish , to violate ( and abolish if possible) all Soverign Rights of every Citizen in this so called Democratic Soverign Republic of ...'Ireland'?

...THE GHOST FROM VALLEY FORGE
I had a dream the other night I didn't understand,
A figure walking through the mist, with flintlock in his hand.
His clothes were torn and dirty, as he stood there by my bed,
He took off his three-cornered hat, and speaking low he said:
We fought a revolution to secure our liberty,
We wrote the Constitution, as a shield from tyranny.
For future generations, this legacy we gave,
In this, the land of the free and home of the brave.
The freedom we secured for you, we hoped you'd always keep,
But tyrants laboured endlessly while your parents were asleep.
Your freedom gone - your courage lost - you're no more than a slave,
In this, the land of the free and the home of the brave.
You buy permits to travel, and permits to own a gun,
Permits to start a business, or to build a place for one.
On land that you believe you own, you pay a yearly rent,
Although you have no voice in choosing how the money's spent.
Your children must attend a school that doesn't educate,
Your moral values can't be taught, according to the state.
You read about the current "news" in a very biased press,
You pay a tax you do not owe, to please the IRS.
Your money is no longer made of silver or of gold,
You trade your wealth for paper, so life can be controlled.
You pay for crimes that make our Nation turn from God to shame,
You've taken Satan's barcode number, as you've traded in your name.
You've given government control to those who do you harm,
So they can padlock churches, and steal the family farm.
And keep our country deep in debt, put men of God in jail,
Harass your fellow countryman while corrupt Masonic courts prevail.
Your public servants don't uphold the solemn oath they're sworn,
Your daughters visit doctors so children won't be born.
Your leaders ship artillery and guns to foreign shores,
And send your sons to slaughter, fighting other people's wars.
Can you regain your Freedom for which we fought and died?
Or don't you have the courage, or the faith to stand with pride?
Are there no more values for which you'll fight to save?
Or do you wish your children live in fear and be a slave?
Sons of the Republic arise and take a stand!
Defend the Constitution, the Supreme Law of the Land!
Preserve our Republic, and each God-given right!
And pray to God to keep the torch of freedom burning bright!
As I awoke he vanished, in the mist from whence he came,
His words were true, we are not free, and we have ourselves to blame.
For even now as tyrants trample each God-given right,
We only watch and tremble -- too afraid to stand and fight.
If he stood by your bedside in a dream while you're asleep,
And wonder what remains of your right he fought to keep.
What would be your answer if he called out from the grave?
Is this still the land of the free and home of the brave?
