De Juana Chaos back on Hunger Strike

category international | crime and justice | news report author Wednesday November 08, 2006 18:25author by ipsiphi iosaf Report this post to the editors

This time he says it is "till the end"

ETA prisoner José Ignacio de Juana Chaos has commenced another hunger strike. He did so on the eve of his sentancing in protest against the expected term of 12.5 years, which has been handed down by the Spanish court this sentance is for promoting terrorism , [ de Juana Chaos authored a series of articles calling for the continuation & escalation of ETA's armed campaign. ]

The Spanish prime minister Zapatero has said in a statement that he expects the sentance (by the independent judiciary) will further complicate the nascent Basque Peace Process. Already most observers recognise that the process is in crises, the internal ETA magazine only a week ago threatened a return to violence if political progress in not seen to be made by late Autumn. Though critics of Basque seperatism would point out that since late Spring over 120 incidents of arson have been attributed to the group & one theft of 350 arms.

This is not the first time José Ignacio de Juana Chaos has gone on hunger strike, the Irish Basque comitee & Ogra Sinn Fein covered the first one which ended in him being force-fed here :-

J.I. de Juana Chaos has already served 18 years in prison. It is most curious that his unusual surname ("Chaos") is never re-produced in full by his english speaking supporters.

* The youth movements of Basque seperatism are facing illegalisation. This will mean an automatic increase in the sentances sought by the courts in relation to the hundreds of arson attacks through the summer. These attacks have left buses, political party offices destroyed & of course 2 local policeman nearly burnt alive.

* Cracks have appeared in Basque seperatism. the leadership of the trade union have called for the street violence to end. This means the left wing are unhappy with the nationalists

* a former ETA prisoner who is not clearly alligned to any of the myriad groups in the umbrella of Basque seperatism has called on de Juan Chaos to end his hunger strike in the latest edition of Gara.

On Saturday afternoon I referred to the phenomona of youthful gratuitous violence increasingly accompanied by amateur video making through mobile phones in a short comment to an article by another contributor touching on the Moyross thing. http://indymedia.ie/article/79539?&condense_comments=fa...22122 . I mentioned a case in Barcelona years ago where two very well-to-do kids burnt a homeless woman alive as she slept in a bank lobby 24hour cash-machine place. I didn't know at that stage that 2 young people had been arrested in Bilbo/Bilbao as part of the ongoing Kale borroka (= burning streets & arson attacks) They doused 2 local police officers ( a municipal force not the ertzaina to which Mr de Juan Chaos the hunger-striker in the article above volunteered himself back in the 1970's). The local residents managed to stop them setting the two cops aflame. The kids belong to Segi which is a political youth wing of the Basque independence & seperatist movement - - - - rather like Ogra Sinn Fein & the Basque solidarity commitee in Ireland - - - come to think about it

Naturally the right wing Spanish state media & political society don't think you can have a peace process with that sort of shite going on.

For his part Arnaldo Ortegi ( who we remember is actually supposed to be the leader of Basque Seperatism & Independence political structures & like - - - you know the Euskadi Gerry Adams) that he would go village to village to ask that the street violence stop so the process can continue. Yet those doing the street violence are doing it because no process is evident & Mr de Juan Chaos isn't eating - he's not even taking visitors now.

There have been close to 200 arson attacks since Summer began. Granted it's not Clichy sous bois the Parisien periphery - but isn't that the point? Didn't we all agree Clichy Sous Bois wasn't p-o-l-i-t-i-c-a-l? Don't we all want the Basque to be p-o-l-i-t-i-c-a-l ???

oh well.

For what it is worth, the Basque people when polled this weekend expressed near majority deep concern & what is going on.

Since 1960 a total of 1,278 people have been killed in the Spanish state by terrorist violence. 194 by a group alligned to "Al Qaeda". 24 by "BVA", 6 by "autonomous anti-capitalist commando", 928 to "ETA"
7 by extreme right / fascists without group. 29 were killed by the "GAL", 75 by the "GRAPO", 2 by "jarrai", 2 by "mendeku", 7 by "others" who defied category but were "terrorist" 4 by "AAA". By contrast The conflict in Ireland from 1969 and 2001, saw 3523 killed.
2055 by republican groups, 1020 by loyalist groups, 368 by British and Irish security forces 80 by groups or persons unknown.

The 29 killed in the Spanish state by the GAL between 1983 & 1987 have just got their movie of the same name which premiered this week. By the same director (Miguel Courtois) as "el Lobo" a movie which examined the case of a closing Franco era Spanish secret service mole in ETA. The GAL operated under the first socialist government of democratic Spain & were treated upon well by the Irish author & journalist Paddy Woodworth in his book : "Dirty War, Clean Hands". I'll go see this movie this weekend & let you know.

meanwhile - take it from me over in Catalonia - Mendiz mendi Mendirik mendi ( = from one mountain to another ) things are looking very bad for this "ceasefire" & the discreet, normalising, democratic, cautious but legal "peace process". Perhaps that's because there are as much as in 1960, 1976 or even 1936 still "two spains" & No-one in Ireland or up north in Euskadi can tell me there is only "one Basque" either.

we know which flag this is. It is a national flag. only 512 people belonging to that nation are imprisoned for political violence relation to the self-determination of that nation.........who calls the shots?

Born in 1955 in Guipzcoa (Legazpia) De Juana Chaos seemed to live an ordinary life, finding employment with the Ertzaintza ( Basque Police force) in the democratic Spanish state in 1979.

After only 4 years of being a copper he joined ETA. Between 1984 and 1987 he led 11 attacks on Madrid with 25 deaths.

* We have no reason to believe the last complete cessation of armed campaign = ceasefire by ETA will be thier last ceasefire

* The theft of arms in France seemed & the reaction to same by the Spanish state executive seemed not only to indicate ETA was taking advantage of a "ceasefire" to re-arm but also underscored the dimension of the "French Basque" provinces, noting that the Spanish state rejected ETA's -("demand/ request") in Spring that the French state take her place at the "all round table of discussions on Basque self-determination".

* We have no reason to believe that the Basque seperatist or independence movement { which straddles not only the armed group ETA (which it might surprise many Irish readers has its own internal magazine published on glossy paper) but also certain trade unions, over 100 bars (which are now being searched by order of the supreme court), a "political prisoner" support network & at least (the very least) 2 political party organisations (both illegalised by the Spanish state constitution "political party laws) } is a unitary movement with one leadership or directive policy which is acting to the same agenda.

* We have every reason to believe that the Spanish state may not for constitutional reasons (which in themselves compound political & entrenched differences) act as one unitary locutor at any "table of negotions" .................(meaning that thus) : the Judiciary will continue to hand out sentances & the demand extraditions (from France) whilst the Executive talks of a "discreet peace process".

* We have every reason to believe that the "9 provinces" self-determination aspirations of Basque seperatists are frustrated by the French state and also the current 14 "autonomous region" constitution of Spain which treats Navarra as a seperate case bearing in mind that the majority of Navarrans are opposed to their lands being included in a self-determination referendum, discussion or any subsequent referendum on same.

& that's enough opinion looking for reaction & comment for the moment, I've no internet connection @ home & it's midnight Catalan time which oddly enough is the same either side of the Pyrennes be it Spanish Basque or French Basque.
