NUIG OSF 'A.R.I.S.E.' AGAINST STATOIL

category galway | anti-capitalism | press release author Thursday November 16, 2006 18:12author by Rossport Solidarity - Ogra Shinn Feinauthor email osfnational at yahoo dot ie Report this post to the editors

A large crowd of Ogra Shinn Fein activists organised and took part in a direct action at the Statoil service station in Newcastle this lunch-time (Thursday), closing the station for buisness for an hour.

The protest was attended by activists from the Socialist Party and Shell to Sea.OSF spokesperson Caitlin Ni Ruanaidh said of the action,

"We mounted a picket today to express our solidarity with the beleaguered community in Rossport, and to raise awareness of the theft of our natural resources."

Bruised and Battered at Ballinaboy last Friday

"We see this issue as part of a broad anti-imperialist struggle and as an integral part of our newly launched A.R.I.S.E. Campaign. We are witnessing massive corporations like Shell and Statoil, bullying a small community and robbing an entire nation with the help of a morally bankrupt state."

"We also used the action to remember the victims of Shell's intransigence, the many peaceful protesters who were beaten, bruised and batton-charged by the Gardai on Friday last, and of course Ken Sara Wiwa who was hung by a Nigerian government that was bankrolled by Shell EP."

"Ogra Shinn Fein is calling for a general boycott of Shell and Statoil stations, and also for people to make their voices heard on the issue and travel to Rossport on the next National Day of Action, Friday, November the 24th."

'A member of the only Provisional Sinn Féin Cumann in the Erris area is employed by Shell E&P on the Corrib gas pipeline and terminal project. Paddy Ruddy from Muingingane, Kilcommon is a member of the local cumann based in Ballycroy.

Shell has promoted Paddy Ruddy as a spokesman for its employees in recent media coverage and he was interviewed by RTE television when work on the site recommenced last month.' by Frank Connolly - Village magazine issue 112 16-22 November 2006.

Its seems a bit odd that ÓSF (Provo youth) should protesting in support of Shell to Sea when members of Provisional Sinn Fén are employed by Shell as spokespersons.

But then what would could you expect from a party that accepts payments (Queens Shilling) from and will take a oath to uphold English rule (policing = RUC/PSNI + Mi5).

SHAME.........Shame......shame.......SHAME

Good to see ÓSF getting stuck in.

Many people paint ÓSF with the same rotting, white-spirits soaked paint brush as they would Sinn Féin.

From my experience of ÓSF, they are a genuine group of left activists including some trotskyists and internationalists (shocking, I know).

If they could only break from the bourgeois, dead-weight of SF and it's dodgy policies and members, they could build a strong youth left movement in Ireland.

Galway seems to be bubbling with activity, keep up the good work.

Shell to hell and their friends aswell!

Fair play to ÓSF on this recent action, and to everyone who's been taking part in these protests around the country. Still, it seems that there are some people who just love injecting negativity into everything.

a bit of trivia: "Its seems a bit odd that ÓSF (Provo youth) should protesting in support of Shell to Sea when members of Provisional Sinn Fén are employed by Shell as spokespersons."

You have only mentioned one person so far. That's still one too much but it hardly provides justification to the tirade against SF, which let's be honest has been one of the parties most behind the Shell to Sea campaign.

And I suppose this should lead to asking "Bill" above if he's speaking officially on behalf on Shell to Sea when he makes his comments.

And of course many in Ógra are internationalists, it's one of the founding tenets of republicanism. I don't see the need though in insulting them by referring to some as Trotskyists.

that being call a trotskist is an insult?

Shame on you!
