éirígí keep up the pressure on Shell and Ahern

category dublin | anti-capitalism | news report author Wednesday December 13, 2006 12:33author by Cormac Ryan PRO éirígí - éirígí Report this post to the editors

éirígí activists staged two successful pickets over the past number of days. The pickets were designed to show both solidarity with the community of Erris, Co Mayo as they battle against Shells plans to build an unsafe refinery and pipeline and also to focus public attention on those responsible for the entire Corrib gas debacle. The two éirígí protests were thus focused on the two main culprits; Shell and the head of the government responsible for the giveaway of Ireland's gas reserves, Bertie Ahern.
logo2.jpg

The first picket was at the Shell service station on the N81 Tallaght By-Pass on the evening of Friday 8th of December. This station, like so many other Shell stations across the country, has been the focus of repeated protests in the battle to force Shell to Sea. Despite the appalling weather up to a dozen people took part in the protest. The protesters were heartened by the amount of motorists who hooted their car horns in support with only a handful of cars using the service station during the two hour duration of the protest.

2pm on Saturday afternoon and it was the turn of Bertie Aherns constituency office in Drumcondra. Ahern, along with his old friend Ray Burke, has been a central player in the natural resources giveaway, both in his time as Minister for finance and now as Taoiseach, which has seen tens of billions of euros worth of gas handed over to multinational corporations. The fact that this has been done at at time when the world is believed to be approaching, or to have passed, the point of peak oil is all the more inexcusable. It is éirígí's view that Ireland's natural resources should be used to the benefit of the people of Ireland. In the case of hydro-carbons this would see the revenue generated from these fuels used to meet the needs of the people in relation to healthcare, education, transport and in researching and in developing sustainable energy technology. As with the Tallaght protest there was a huge level of support for the protest from both passing motorists and pedestrians.

Good to see the message being brought into Bertie's constituency. Its been too easy for him to claim that he is the honest broker between Shell and the locals in Erris, while in reality he's been up to his neck in the whole thing for years. Its only when it starts costing him votes in Dublin Central that he'll start to take notice.

Good to see the pressure continuing, another good contribution from the people at Eirigi.
Crunch time is on the horizon and it is up to all of us to keep the tempo up and use this "quieter" time to get ready for Shells inevitable attempts to begin the natural resource robbery and destruction of rossport in mid-2007..
Solidarity!

Well done ! could not make it, but putting the spotlight on Ahern etal seems the way to go, especially approaching an election. By and large Shell do'nt give a damm about their reputation/lack of, they have the state facilitating their rape of North Mayo and their projected robbery of the resources of our country. If that is not treason...

Hats off to you good people, Ahern and McDowell should feel the heat for this, for in addition to the above they then ordered the bludgeoning of peaceful protesters in scenes reminiscent of RUC B Specials attacks on civil rights marchers.

Well done again, Keep up the good work, see you on the picket line !

Fair play to all concerned. I see that the éirígí website is carrying an interesting story on the nationalisation of gas in Bolivia. That one of the poorest countries in South America can legislate that its natural resources be used for the benefit of people and not of multinational companies (including Shell) is an example to us all and an indication of the interests that the Dublin government serves.

Nationalise Ireland's natural resources!!

Shell Out!!

Celia S.

How will Bertie lose votes in Dublin Central? Are Eirigi running a candidate? Is Mary Loo's sister going to run for eirigi?
The people of DC don't even know eirigi exist.
The people of DSC do, because some eirigi idiot has written all over their walls.
Adams is in Belfast meeting the RUC (publicly and not behind closed doors as he has done on many occasions) and eirigi are standing outside berties office in Drumcondra. Who is selling out the greatest? Ahern sold our assets are gone and now adams want to sell off our aspirations.
Take the bus to Belfast lads and picket the provos as well.
some chance!

Charlie & Bean DeValera,

I refer both of you to the link below on the éirígí website. I think it may go some way to answering your queries. The item refers to éírígí's position on the proposed policing agreement for the six-counties. I expect Charlie that when you read it you will realise that, no, éirígí is not nor could not be a front for SF.

Bean DeValera - Whatever about 'picketing' SF in Belfast, éirígí have been to Belfast and, in particular, very recently partook in a debate re: policing where I believe they re-iterated their position. This meeting was also attended by senior SF personnel. éirígí members engaged with them and highlighted the fallacy of the SF position as éirígí sees it.

Of course, I'm sure you have been to Belfast to 'picket' SF.

Nope...never been to Belfast to picket SF...I couldn't be arsed. Funny that you would think that anyone who asks questions about eirigi is that way inclined.
The reason many people think eirigi are a sf puppet is because we cannot imagine how it would take you so long to realise the path sf are taking could only lead to a british state administered by local politicians.
I read catneys letter to the Irish News and the reply from other republicans regarding his blinkered vision up until now. I share these views.
Your members were part of a sf party which easily accepted a role in administering british rule in the six counties. your members promoted this administration. your members campaigned for this administration. and now, we are to believe that you found the road to damascus (or donegal?).
eirigi has its roots firmly in sf.
petty spats in DNW or wherever is hardly the founding stone of a genuine movement.
see you all back in 44 when the lovers tiff is over!!

Well done on the picket. Need to see more of this. Bolivia is a good example alright. I am coming at it from a slightly different angle i suppose, but I can't see these being an SF front. Had a look at what they are saying generally and on the police thing. They have my respect anyways.

Is that Kevin Heapy in the photo. Does he not work for the sf newspaper "republican news"? And is the other guy the photographer for the same paper?
What is going on?

Sean.

That's Ciarán Heaphey, former Chairperson of Dublin Sinn Féin and AP/RN worker. The other man is not nor has ever been a photographer. They are both members of éirígí.

Since when did Labour youth boys have such intimate knowledge of the inner workings of Sinn Féin? Don't know who Kevin Heapy is but i do know Ciaran Heaphey who used to work in the Phoblacht. A sound man now departed by the looks of it. 'Whats going on' says the man from Labour Youth. The photo would appear to offer some clarity. It would appear from the photo that Ciarán is carrying an eirigi poster. He is at an eirigi protest. He no longer works in An Phoblacht. Go figure.

Pull the other one Marv, a genuine split from SF without any of them getting shot or beaten up or threatened? Paddy Fox, Jo Jo O'Connor, Anthony McIntyre etc...
When the Real's split from the Provos they were nearly put out of business by their former comrades 'cos they were a threat.

I refer you to the éirígí weblink in a previous post. If this doesn't clearly delineate éirígí from Sinn Féin then I don't know what does. I know you are dead Marvin Gaye's Da, but please do try to at last give the pretense that your brain is still functioning (if even from beyond the grave). perhaps eirigi have not been threatened etc because they have played a smarter game than the 32csm etc

there was also a small incident in the summer of 2005. The IRA was stood down ( but dont tell anyone there trying to keep it on the QT)

I would appeal to respondents to remember that Shell to Sea is grateful for all support and it demeans the tremendous efforts of the people out in the rain and wind this morning and every morning by using precious energy to focus on each other rather than on the issue which brings us all to this page.

We are seeking help for a long banner stretch at the High Court on 16 January and hope to fully line the Quay on which the Four Courts stand. All groups are invited and because it is a work day a long effective banner held by two or three people will make up for the shortfall - postering to add variety and colour would be welcome to punctuate the banner stretch. Other issue groups which support Shell to Sea are very welcome!

What is happening within Sinn Fein? First their office boys slink off to another group and then their moneyman Martin Hyland is shot. Looks like a bad week for the Dublin provos.

author by carl spencepublication date Thu Dec 14, 2006 21:25author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Delivering proclamations and protesting about Shell is a bit weak for an active group. Surely this is nothing that Sinn Fhein would object to so why the new name? If they wanted to do these things surely Lord Adams would let them. After all, if Tom Hartley is the chairperson of Eirigi, they must still be close to the politbureau.
Is Eirigi a Sinn Fhein student group or just a new campaign front like the socialists create?
Are there any other campaigns they have joined?
Finally, my local paper stated that the Dundalk FC protestor outside the FAI HQ was a member of Eirigi. Is this true? Is this a new campaign?
