Anarchist Youth call it a day.

category dublin | anti-capitalism | news report author Saturday February 10, 2007 17:49author by Anarchist Youth Report this post to the editors

Anarchist Youth

Dec. 2005 - Dec. 2006.
March 18th
March 18th

Anarchist Youth Call it a day.

Just before Christmas, Anarchist Youth decided unanimously to formally disband.

All remaining members have or are in the process of joining the Workers Solidarity Movement. We felt we wanted to be part of a larger organisation with a better organisational structure, more of a support base and better resources.

Anarchist Youth was formed in December 2005 after an initiative from a number of teenage anarchists who felt an anarchist youth group was needed in Ireland. The group successfully helped bridge the perceived gap between older anarchists and new comers to anarchism who can sometimes be intimidated, which was one of our original plans.

At its height Anarchist Youth had an active membership of around 15 with an outer group of around 30 friends and semi-active members. The group helped bring a lot of young people into contact with anarchism and successfully helped existing anarchist to mature their politics and have the experience of being involved in a political group.

Thanks to all the groups and individuals who helped us over the last exciting year. Highlights included March 18th, Baldonnel, Trips to Rossport, Mayday in Belfast, Talking down in Galway and playing the WSM at soccer.

We look forward to getting involved with the rapidly growing Workers Solidarity Movement.

(A short video documenting AY's last year will hopefully be finished in the next month)

''Recently we have experienced an influx of new members. In the run up to Christmas Anarchist Youth disbanded and many of its ex-members decided to join the WSM. We were very glad to welcome them into the organisation as everyone has something to contribute and we know we can achieve far more as we grow.

There is no separate youth wing of the WSM, all members have an equal say and vote. However, if you still feel that there is a need for an Anarchist Youth organisation in Ireland get in touch with us. The ex-AY people have committed themselves to helping any initiatives that emerge. ''

what about up and coming youngsters, no anarcho youth entry point for them any more...?

'rapidly growing' wsm - how many members in Dublin now? 25-30? 30+? just curious.

"Anarchy is organisation, organisation and more organiation" malatesta

I'm glad the reason for your voluntary disbandment is not the decision of a state judicary. I'm glad you didn't all have to line up for older party members in a show of unity and go to prison. I'm sort of glad you're not getting solidarity mobilisations which are subsequently illegalised. I'm sort of glad you didn't have to change your group name a few times just to keep the pool table. I'm sort of sad you didn't get to the stage of having to manage the pool table. They take ages to pay off and everyone fiddles them.
Robert Anton Wilson whose death is reported on today's newswire rather belatedly - wrote he had been an anarchist till he got tired & scared & worn out & took up libertarianism instead. His exact words were "I'm not an anarchist any longer, because I've concluded that anarchism is an impractical ideal. Nowadays, I regard myself as a libertarian. I suppose an anarchist would say, paraphrasing what Marx said about agnostics being "frightened atheists," that libertarians are simply frightened anarchists".
I've been a libertarian for years now. & I find it very easy going for the most part. Where as I used to have to get angry or verbal now I just feign ignorance & after a while discover most people aren't listing to me anyway. Most groups I do anything with (like changing history - society - making it better - having a go at the cops/state/capitalist) describe themselves as non-heirarchial now. I've got to meet people with different opinions and learnt that they are "sort of" leaning towards the better end of the spectrum. You've got to be careful about the communist youth though, they're all paranoid & watched by the branch and MI5 or their local national equivalent. It makes a change from being an anarchist when you wouldn't accept being on anything less than a proper CIA / FBI list. Being an "ex-anarchist youth" is really quite a wonderful time to your life, there are comparitively few pressures on the day to day basis- the clothes style and music are utilitarian & you get to download things of the internet for free. Now You have all those experiences behind you which you can put to in the future to even better use - practical experience of concensus & autonomy - will help you along - really it will & if it doesn't, @ least ye learnt how to get out of the angry cops' way.
I hope you go on to be middle aged, fogey, ancient, venerable libertarians or anarchosyndicalistic bods and dudettes. But a few of you most probably won't stick to the path of light. But at least when all is said & done, & done & said :- being an anarchist youth like you lot were anarchist youth [& making Irish history with it]- was never going to mean growing up to be a gun-toting-mask-wearing-freedom-fighter-supporting-replacing- patriot. This maybe because you learnt earlier on in your young sweet lives that leadership is bollox & flags don't help much. Because sooner or later as a patriot you'd be wanting a youth group to replace you which finally got you of that endless cycle of seeming like you're winning every time you lose.
Anyway - no worries yiz have a few years to go before being "libertarians". My advice to yiz would be to start a small business enterprise or write a novel - being a patriot may suck mostly - but it does bring a pension & extra-special status in old age - all you'll need is a beret or a speech impediment when it comes to explaining exactly what it was you did. On the other hand ibertarians tend to
dig their own shallow pauper graves years before that with all the libertinism which is so tempting & the getting up the noses of the local patriots which never loses its fun. But the great news is - coz we've remained God's & organised religions' loyal opposition all our lives - yet arguing simple ethical & moral truth - we get to go Heaven (you're not made to go though. .it's up to you.... you can say no..... abstain...... in which case you just .:.rest)
But that much wisdom offered I suppose you will just go join the "ever growing" WSM... enough said... bring your white boiler suits with you - they looked cool ;-)

You don't see anything funny about a group of anarchists joining with another group because it has a better organisational structure?

Anarchy is the absence of orders, not the absence of order.

You just can't trust someone who's not doing wrong only because it's illegal, just as you can't trust someone who's not doing wrong only because they believe in some god or other. Only atheist anarchists are moral.
