Phone Call From Tara Vigil

category national | history and heritage | news report author Thursday March 01, 2007 18:52author by C Murray Report this post to the editors

PPP is signed, the road is due to begin on Monday

One of the activists from the Hill of Tara vigil camp has sent a message
to activists and people who are in solidarity with the desire of the campaign
to Save Tara to support the vigil:

A Legal challenge , today, failed to put a stop to the PPP, and the works
are to begin in earnest in 72 hours. There are possibly some options to challenge
the issue but a lot have been worn out , the vigil campaign is quite small and very
dedicated. They have asked for support in the form of tech for evidence, and solidarity
protests in the next couple of days.
Navan Protest
Navan Protest

The legal challenges have been catalogued on the indymedia site, approaches to
environmental cases are tied down within legislations which favour and are based on
the tri-partite PPP process.

There are options and challenges but they are limited to a 72 hour period.

The vigil therefore (which is independent of leadership and non-hierarchical)
want people to be prepared to come down to the Hill of Tara and act as witnesses,
support and ye can do a bit of blockading too if you want.

Most of the vigil are at the camp all the time and have not come into Dublin a lot
to meet with people and discuss the issues, but a lot of you would have met
them at the various celebrations and protests- especially in Navan and around the
major festivals of the last year.

* Also its good to have photographic evidence in the case of any kind of bullying
or harassment of NVDA and peaceful protest.
*Food is also good.
*Rights knowledge and independent witnesses are good too.

******Will update if some group manage to injunct against works within the next three days.

M3 road contracts likely to be signed shortly
Irish Times, Friday 2nd March 2007
Tim O'Brien

Contracts for the construction of the controversial M3 motorway in Co
Meath are expected to be signed next week between the National Roads
Authority and preferred tenderer Siac Ferrovial.
Siac Ferrovial which trades as Eurolink has already moved machinery on
to a site compound south of Dunshaughlin.
NRA chairman Peter Malone, recently reappointed for a second five-year
term by Minister for Transport Martin Cullen, said yesterday that
contracts were at final stages and were expected to be signed in the
coming week.
The motorway is controversial chiefly because of its proximity to the
Hill of Tara but it has also attracted criticism because of its
proximity to other motorways, including the M2 and M4.
Other objectors have complained of its toll road status. A number of
groups have campaigned against its construction but a High Court
challenge was unsuccessful.
News of the imminent start of construction was greeted as "not a good
thing" by Vincent Salafia who took the High Court challenge. Mr Salafia
said yesterday he understood further legal challenges including a
challenge at European level were in the pipeline. The campaign would
continue, he said.
Siac Ferrovial also built the N4 toll motorway through the midlands
which opened in December 2005 and is currently involved in the upgrade
of the M50.
The €500 million-plus M3 project is to include about 60km of motorway
and 50km of access roads. It will utilise approximately 700 hectares of
land between Clonee and north of Kells.
The existing N3 Dublin to Cavan road is one of the principal routes
linking Dublin to the north-west. The route is currently dual
carriageway to the Clonee bypass and severe congestion is experienced at
peak times at Dunshaughlin, Navan and Kells.
A spokesman for the NRA confirmed the Dunshaughlin site had been set up
on foot of a transfer agreement for materials from work on the M50.
