Its typical of Dublin contibitors to dismiss the rest of the country on indy. The way this artical is written you would think there was only parade in the country.

Its kind of arrogant.

Wouldn't you be better off sticking this stuff up on Flickr, not indymedia.

In response to the two comments above;

1. The newswire is openwire, anyone can photo any parade and put it up on the Newswire.
(the photographer happened to be in Dublin)
2. There is nothing wrong with culture (or a culture section) most iMC's have one, and there is
one operating on here.
3.The parade was very good, and some activist type people who are always running about,
actually brought their kids out for the craic and had a good day out, watching the parade.

As an Irish person living in France it is delightful to log onto Indymedia to view these great photographs. They represent my culture and give insight into what happened on the day. Merci Beaucoup Richard for posting them!

I like Whelan's photos - & over the years he has provided good photos of many an event which you can see by checking his previous posts at the top right hand corner of the screen.as an irish man living in the old city of Barcelona I don't need reminders of our culture, each day on the way to the metro I pass no less than six Irish bars with their flags, advertising, unread copies of Joyce with the covers glued together and of course the delightful people themselves - pink faced - drunk & modest & forever with soccer t-shirts so that others won't confuse them with the pinkfaced, drunk and equally modest Engurlish. Not that all Irish people are pinkfaced, modest and rednecked anymore. We can see as much in Mr Whelan's photos. Id that weren't enough evidence - "take my word for it" : I met the Dubliner and fellow indymedia head Duncan during these last days and he now sports a wonderful tan which he puts down to gardening & hard work - though I insisted melanin and genetics had something to do with it.
I can't help but wonder at the Tennessee university band contigent - which is in the last photo. Their costume is orange, and Tennessee is one of those US states which boasts the most "Scotch-Irish" in the USA, as descendents of the "orange" tradition of Irish nationhood or "non-nationhood" call themselves over there. So I went to wikipedia to check & - "In 2000, the five most common self-reported ethnic groups in the state were: American (17.3%), African American (16.4%), Irish (9.3%), English (9.1%), and German (8.3%).[2] Those who identify themselves as 'American' are most likely of British or Scotch-Irish (Ulster-Scots) descent." That presumption plays out in the religious affiliation as well - only 6% of the citizens of Tennessee claim to be RC. Tennessee of course passed from Cherokee indians to the Spanish to the Americans and long before giving birth to Elvis Presley played an important role in the Confederate states of Dixie. So in a way I suppose the TEnnessee band represented the "love ulster" crowd quite peacefully and without incident. Aint that nice. I doubt there was even the hint of a klan hood.
My favourite song to come out of the state was on the "arrested development" album "3years, 5months and 2days" which of course wouldn't have been possible they say without Memphis before -
"Now I see the importance of history Why people be in the mess that they be
Many journeys to freedom made in vain By brothers on the corner playin ghetto games
I ask you lord why you enlightened me Without the enlightment of all my folks
He said cuz I set myself on a quest for truth And he was there to quench my thirst
But I am still thirsty..."

Amen.

And well said, C, on all points.

Sham 69, there's absolutely nothing stopping others from around the country taking photos of their local parades and events and sticking them on the newswire. You could even do it yourself.

If there's no provision for colour, music, craic, and a grand day out, I don't want to be part of your revolution.

Lovely photos.
