May Day in Berlin 2007

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Sunday May 06, 2007 19:47author by Paula Geraghtyauthor email mspgeraghty at yahoo dot ie Report this post to the editors

Annual May Day festivities are usually marked by a big festival in Kreuzberg, also known as Little Istanbul. It's in an economically poorer part of Berlin but a richly diverse multicultural setting.
berlin_mayday0703.jpg

There's a huge festival with rows and rows of food stalls, people selling beer and there's a real party atmosphere. As my German language abilities are severely limited I couldn't find out when the 'main' march was on, what ever that meant. I kept asking people when the workers march was on and people answered smilingly, that they were all workers' marches. There were posters for all sorts of demonstrations for all different times. The images are from the festival and the march which took place at 6pmish. By 10.30pm a full scale riot had started. It was a mixture of autonomists and young people not appearing to be politically alligned, having a good time and watching the spectacle of the ritual Berlin May Day Riots.

A mini industry is created post riot. Money is returned for glass and plastic bottles. During the day, you see people looking in rubbish bins, asking punters in beergardens if they can take the empties.
