We were assured by Conservative and Labour politicians that the Online Safety Act was designed to protect children. In the last few days, its real, more sinister purpose has become, writes Andrew Doyle.

Griffith College graduate launches new website

Striving to be a new voice within Irish journalism, www.gaelicpress.com has been set up to highlight news and humanitarian issues to a worldwide, and savvy, audience. The site aims to highlight news issues not being covered by the regular press outlets, and will include hard news items. It’s my intention to focus on issues that require a degree of investigation, insight reports, and analysis of hard news features.

The site includes a number of news feeds that will bring breaking news to gaelicpress readers, and will include pieces related to press freedoms, reportage issues, and conflict reporting. It is envisaged that the site will eventually act as a bridge or portal to the main publishing desks, and details of this arrangement will be published at a later date.

As an ex-Griffith College student, with a 2.1 degree in journalism and visual media, I have seen much of my work broadcast and published – including pieces published to www.indymedia.ie - and I have decided to launch my own website as an alternative vehicle to the mainstream press. I also hope to encourage press freedoms, grassroots and campaigning journalism, issues related to writing generally, and news that generates interest. Gaelicpress.com was launched two weeks ago.

Just had a look at your site. I do not see what the stars & stripes and the bald eagle have to do with Irish journalism. Perhaps you could find yourself a page background which would be more representative of Ireland.
