offsite link Why?s it so Hard to Get Electricity in a New Home? Mon Aug 05, 2024 07:00 | Ben Pile
When Ben Pile moved into a new house he got a nasty surprise. It had a prepayment meter that was about to run out of credit. Fixing this proved to be absurdly hard, which, presumably, is just what the green lobby wants.

Planet Before Profit

“The science on global warming is now incontrovertible: the climate is changing, man is helping to make that happen, and the damage could be irreversible.”
-The Financial Times
Al Gore’s film, “An Inconvenient Truth” and other recent studies have proven the need for immediate action to stop climate change.

The 30% increase in CO2 in the atmosphere has resulted in a sharp rise in temperature and a doubling in the number of hurricanes. Most scientists and evidence now agree that if a “business as usual” approach is maintained the earth is a ‘planet under threat’.

Projected temperature rises would melt the polar ice caps, raising sea levels, resulting in widespread flooding. Limerick will be permanently flooded in 50 years, according to the Enviromental Protection Agency.

And yet the governments of the world are still refusing to act. Many politicians have recently paid lip service to the issue but are unwilling to invest in renewable energy or to take on big business polluters.

The failed Kyoto agreement is proof of this. The deal was so watered down, under pressure from big business, that scientists estimate 30 ‘Kyotos’ are needed. Even this deal was postponed from 1992, when the first conference took place, to 2005 when it became enforcable. Still it was rejected by US big business as “too harmful to profits”.

The problem is the rule of big business. Their thirst for profit is why Kyoto failed. A global plan of action is needed to put the needs of the people and the planet before the profits of this super rich elite. This will mean taking on the power of the energy multinationals. Energy production and public transport must be rationally and democratically organised by ordinary people not by ‘the market’ and big business.

By directing the worlds resources into renewable energy and public transport, climate change could be stopped in its tracks!
