‘Tara Campaigners to Picket Irish Embassies World Wide Tomorrow’

category international | history and heritage | press release author Thursday July 12, 2007 19:15author by TaraWatchauthor email info at tarawatch dot orgauthor phone 087-972-8603 Report this post to the editors

Timed to co-incide with visit of John Gormley to EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas

PRESS RELEASE - TARAWATCH.org - 12 July 2007

TaraWatch will picket a number of Irish embassies world wide, and at Dail Eireann, tomorrow, to protest the failure of the Irish Government’s refusal to heed warnings from the European Commission that M3 works at the Hill of Tara are illegal.

TaraWatch UK will picket in London. TaraWatch US will hold demonstrations in a number of cities including New York, Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles. The Dublin demonstration will begin outside Dail Eireann, Kildare Street, at 11.00am.

International support has been rapidly growing since the World Monuments Fund designated Tara one of the 100 Most Endangered sites in June. In addition, news of the election pact between the Green Party and Fianna Fail, at the cost of Tara, as well as Government refusal to heed EU warnings, have inflamed passions in many Irish abroad.

Many supporters are also traveling from abroad to join in protests here in Ireland, and camping near the Hill of Tara.

TaraWatch is stepping up protests in an effort to put pressure on Minister Gormley to act and prevent this matter going before the courts. A large ‘Love Tara’ march will be held on Saturday, 21st July
in Dublin at 1.00pm, which will go from the Garden of Remembrance to Custom House.

The demonstration in New York City is scheduled to occur between 12 noon and 2 pm on Friday, 13 July. The Irish Consulate is located at 345 Park Avenue in Manhattan. However, participants will gather at 52nd Street and Park Avenue at 11:30 am.

The Chicago demonstration at the Irish Embassy is between 12 Noon and 3 PM on July 13, Friday. The Irish Embassy is located in the Wrigley Building on Michigan Avenue at the Chicago River, the same location of the British Embassy.

The demo is at the Irish Embassy in London on Friday 13th July between 12 Noon and 2PM. Embassy of Ireland, 17 Grosvenor Place, London SW1X 7HR

Darren Delahunty, one of the organizers of the London said:

“Irish people in the UK are outraged at the the Irish authorities to try and proceed with the road, even when the public are so against it, and the EU have stated it is illegal.

“Since Irish abroad could not vote in Irish elections, we are making our views known to our Government in the only way we can.

Richard Wallace, one of the organizers of the US events said:

“Irish Americans and the public in general are horrified when they hear of the M3 plans. We are determined to let our opinions be clearly known to the Irish authorities abroad.

Are there any images available of the demos yesterday in ireland and abroad?
Any details of how many/who attended?

The Irish independent has an interview with Mr Salafia who is again threatening Legal Action.
The action appears to be concentrated around the issue of the destruction of the Lismullin
Site. The site is currently being excavated under the supervision of Dr Conor Newman and
The order for 'preservation by record' was given by Dick Roche , just before handing the
dusty charts to minister Gormley. The legal action would proabably be difficult as it involves
the order of one minister and the assumption of duty of another minister, add to that the
issue of the problems in communications between the varied Depts in D.O.E and the
Comissioners in OPW- it could be a very, very long drawn out legal case.
There were no photos of the raining blockade in either newspaper.

You cant always believe what you read in the papers. I know, I work freelance for them!

Does anyone have any reliable info on the Embassy protests - which Embassies, how many people attended, Photos etc.

I'm beginning to lose interest in doing this story.

Vincent Salfia cannot take any legal case on this issue unless he pays the costs for the previous case/s.
He entered into an agreement with the Government not to pursue further Legal action on the M3 in return for the Tax Payer picking up the costs of his last failed challenge.

hi ,there were 20- 30 people outside the Irish Embassy ,between 12-00 & 14-00.
Leaflets were handed out to members of the public ,they were amazed at whats going on and were disgusted that the Irish people have let this go on for the last few years .

We also had a load of Irish builders from Co.Meath who stated its a travesty ,and took a load of leaflets to hand out on the building site they were on.

I know people on here will say wow 20-30 people, but there was a united front there on Friday as we also had a couple from CST. We also had the Archdruid of GB and his followers. Letters were also handed into the Embassy to demand a re-route of the M£.

It is just such a shame that we have had lots of e mails from freelance/independant Journalists who are intrested in Tara and want it re routed, yet none of them felt the need to turn up to the demos and report it...........
.

thanks for your time
