The West?s Cold War-era doctrine of mutually assured destruction relied on rational actors. Iran is not rational, says Clive Pinder. It is eschatological. Islamism is not a deterrable enemy. It is a theological death cult.

Sceptics lose all their scepticism when faced with claims the Government could block out the Sun, says Ben Pile. But this is no less a delusion of grandeur than the idea human CO2 emissions are controlling the temperature.

Global Poverty Debate

category international | anti-capitalism | press release author Tuesday July 17, 2007 00:33author by Socialist Youth - Limerick SYauthor email socialistyouth at hotmail dot comauthor address Dublin, Belfast, Limerick, Cork & Galwayauthor phone 086-8064801 Report this post to the editors

Come to RESISTANCE!

Its two years after the G8 agreed to ‘Make Poverty History’ and yet 1 billion people are still without access to clean water, according to a recent report by the United Nations World Institute for Development. Both Bob Geldof and Bono have both described the situation as “a farce” with Bono even saying “I feel like a fool that I ever believed them”.

World poverty and inequality will be a key theme at an upcoming debate between Socialist Youth and the Young PDs, taking place on Saturday the a 21st of July and Galway on the 28th.

With a billion people earning less than $1 dollar a day it’s no surprise that the total wealth of 50% of the world’s adult population amounts to only 1.1% of the world’s wealth. At the same time the richest 500 people own 1.7% of it. Now a new Cartier designer deodorant is available for those super rich people, costing $30,000 a pop.

The debate will centre over the source of the problem – and the solution. It promises to be an interesting debate, with Socialist Youth arguing that big business are part of the problem and that they expoloit countries throughout the world, taking natural resources and leaving poverty. On the other hand the Young PDs will argue that, in fact, big business are part of the solution and that the ‘third world’ needs to open its markets to multinationals more.

The debate is on at 1pm upstairs in Riddlers bar on Sarsfield St and is part of ‘RESISTANCE’, a forum for young people being hosted by Socialist Youth. There are similar events in Dublin and Belfast on the same day and Cork and Galway on the 28th.
