Maoists quit govt; announce protest movement

category international | anti-capitalism | other press author Tuesday September 18, 2007 17:24author by pat c Report this post to the editors

Some interesting developments in Nepal. The Maoist ministers have resigned from the Cabinet. It looks as if the Maoists have decided on mass protests rather than resuming armed struggle at this stage.

The CPN (Maoist) has decided to quit the government as eight-party leaders failed to forge consensus on its demands.

Maoist ministers submitted their resignation letters to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala as soon as the meeting of top leaders of four major ruling allies ended in a deadlock. The leaders had been engaged in hectic parleys from early morning today.

All four Maoist ministers – Krishna Bahadur Mahara, Dev Gurung, Hisila Yami and Khadga Bishwokarma - were at Baluwatar when the top leaders' meeting was underway. They left Baluwatar at around 12:30 pm after announcing resignation. Leaders and intermediaries were engaged in bilateral and multilateral discussions since last couple of days in their attempt to convince the Maoist leaders not to announce departure from the coalition government.

PM Koirala has rejected two key Maoist demands: announcement of republic before the polls and proportional representation-based election system.

Meanwhile, the Maoists have announced nationwide protest movement from Tuesday.

Let it be a salutory reminder how fortunate the Nepalese people have been so far to avoid the same creatures taking power in their country.

Well the Nepalese have had their fair share of monsters. The King got the current job because one of the young royals murdered everyone in the palace one night. The Kings (or dynasty) got the job coz they're incarnations of Vishnu. I don't know at what stage the current king went from being a close relative of an incarnation of Vishnu to an actual incarnation of Vishnu though I'm sure it had something to do with his legitimacy & I'm not really sure about the heridatary incarnation thing at all. But I tried to bring people through it in one of the first Nepalese threads, http://indymedia.ie/article/68469 which indeed have long ago become one of Pat C.'s areas of expertise. He's the Nepal man now. & looking through the archives it really is quite impressive how much Irish interest there has been in Nepal. Especially considering we're not particularly Maoist or into reincarnation or even wear country knit socks or go in for hiring sherpas to carry our gear up bloody big mountains.
