It is not quite true about the KR seat at the UN. It was China that was
the principal in vetoing the recognition of the 1970 post KR regime. The
international community at large did not want Cambodia to become a part
of or a colony of Viet Nam. The idea was not to restore the KR but to
bring about a UN transformation process. This is in fact what happened
more or less in later years. In reality China was the main backer of the
Pol Pot regime - anger over it should be channelled in that direction -
the KR regime was an anathema to everything Washington stood for or
tried to prevent in South East Asia going back to the end of the French
days in Indochina.
As regards Kissinger it was Nixon's policy he was implementing, not his
own. The extension of the Viet Nam war into Cambodia in the late 1960s
was brought about by Hanoi, not Washington. The latter later attacked
suspected sanctuaries of insurgents across the border. It was part of
the war in the region. It was not "mass murder" as described in the
thread or by the Jane Fonda types at the time. However that is not to
say it was a wise or moral action or that the extension of the war
should have been kept secret initially, albeit for military reasons.
Old Uncle Sam gets blamed for everything even things done by mortal
enemies such as Saddam, Al Qaeda and the Khmer Rouge!
Henry Kissinger as 'shuttle diplomacy' Secretary of State in Nixon's administration was responsible for the secret saturation bombing of Cambodia. Another mass murderer who won't face trial.
For years the US supported the Khmer Rouge both militarily and politically. For years after the KR had been driven from power they retained their seat at the UN courtesy of the US using its veto on the Security Council.
Hopefully Fidel Castro and Kim Jong IL will face justice too.
