Public Gathering on Climate Change

category dublin | environment | event notice author Sunday October 07, 2007 01:10author by USI Environmental Awareness Officer - Student Action on Climate Changeauthor email environment at usi dot ie Report this post to the editors

Meeting of student activists and other concerned citizens for climate change campaign

Student Action on Climate Change hosts the first public gathering on the urgent issue of tackling Ireland's contribution to climate change, on October 20th at 1.30pm in Trinity College Dublin (Goldsmith Hall).

Climate change is probably the most important issue affecting our world, and we all have a responsibility to take action to reduce our emissions. Student Action on Climate Change’s aim is to publicly campaign to put pressure on the Irish Government so that Ireland can stop dragging our feet on this issue.

The campaign is a grassroots movement and welcomes everyone interested in protecting our environment. In our efforts we are supported by a huge coalition of organisations such as Friends of the Earth, Oxfam, An Taisce, Concern and many more in the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition. This joint climate change campaign has already made progress, with one of the key demands (the Climate Change Bill) being debated this week in Seanad Éireann.

This meeting will be a gathering of student leaders, activists and people concerned about this issue, and is an important major step in building a sustained campaign of students and others to demand real action on climate change, in our homes, our communities, our colleges and most importantly from our government. Among our demands are:

-Substantial increase in investment in sustainable energy in all sectors, including electricity and transport.
-A climate change law ensuring annual Co2 reductions, which will be independently monitored to ensure we meet our targets

It is the responsibility of all of us to act on this, the most important issue of our time. We have an opportunity to make a real difference in the struggle for a more sustainable Ireland.

Have to ask what's the point of having a government minister at a conference about climate change, whatever the colour of his shirt. the green party has thoroughly sold out on environmental issues, as well as social justice issues. i hope you'll give him a hard time at the very least.
