On June 16th 2006 in an act of culmination Michael Mc Dowell sponsored Dick Roche's
SIB through Dail Eireann (FF were at Charlie Haughey's Funeral). It reduced all rights
to protest and was facilitated by FG (save Michael Ring who Protested it).
We have no heritage protection in Irish legislation.
OPW which was created during the Famine era to create leaky canals and roads
has been privatised; and road-building programmes are now undertaken by
the NRA (also the biggest Archaeological employer in the State). The NRA is
a profit-making concern with perks and % going to people appointed by the
Minister for Environment. The NRA solely deals in tolling and profit with no
instigation of statutory protection by FF/PD for Natural and built heritage.
Everything is outsourced and employment is no longer guaranteed, with government
focus entirely on unsustainable development and urban sprawl because that is where the
money is.
SF opposed the NMA. and the SIB.
Green Opposed NMA.
FG focus entirely on the creation of jobs through the Knowledge economy and infrastructural
development, they have allowed these laws pass largely unamended through the
Oireachtas and their environment minister is very quiet on issues of employment
creation and heritage.
[Interesting books on Stonework and employment in craft include Seamus Murphy's
'Stonemad' and 'Irish stone walls' by Pat Mc Afee.]
Interesting that the issue of Trade/craft and education does not come under the political remit
of aspiring politicos... I would suggest any interest in 'identity' and 'culture' would involve
heritage education -but not one political party has a coherent policy on work or trade or heritage.
and seem to follow FF round like lap-dogs..
o well!
