The IX IRISH-LATIN AMERICA FILM FESTIVAL will focus on short films and documentaries about Latin America made by filmmakers from Latin America, Europe and Canada. The festival is aligned with LATIN AMERICA WEEK 2008, which this year takes place from 5th to 12th April. The theme this year is private exploitation of water and its impact on human development in Latin America.

All films in Spanish have English subtitles.

12,000 Years of Blindness
Director: Rod Stoneman – Ireland / 2007 (51 mins)
There are 50 million blind people in the world of which 90% live in developing countries.
80% of all blindness is avoidable. Eamon O Donoghue, an Ophthalmologist based in Galway, arrived in Venezuela in 2007 to work on this preventable disability. The documentary was screened to a full house at The Cork Film Festival 2007 and recently at The Dublin Film Festival. Both the Director and the central participant will be present to introduce the documentary and lead a discussion after its screening.

Quiero Vivir
Director: Muriel Brener – France & Bolivia / 2006 (88 mins)
This documentary, made over six months by the filmmaker in Bolivia, highlights the plight of young people on the streets as they battle hunger, unemployment, language (Aymara) and racism in their daily fight for survival. They received assistance from the NGO Enda Bolivia. The Director has been invited to the projection.
Marie Laure Picoury, who worked with some of the participants featured in Quiero Vivir, will lead a discussion afterwards. She is currently living in Ireland and working with AfrI (www.afri.ie).
