Is there a right to die? As the Assisted Dying Bill vote looms, Prof James Alexander ponders the issues, asking if the whole debate would change if we think of it in terms of duties instead of rights.

Net migration?hit a record high of nearly one million in 2023, 170,000 more than previously thought, in an extraordinary indictment of the Tories' post-Brexit record on 'cutting immigration'. No wonder the NHS is overrun.

Dublin protest at Shell HQ in solidarity with Rossport

category dublin | environment | news report author Thursday September 11, 2008 21:33author by Andrew - WSM (personal capacity) Report this post to the editors

Around thirty people took part in a protest at Shell HQ on Lesson street tonight.

An odd feature of the picket was the two secret police men who were pretending to be journalists. When challenged the one with the camera claimed he was 'Tom' from the Independent. Why a photographer would bring along a mate with a video camera was unexplained. A call to the Independent newsdesk to check out Tom's tall tale was greated with puzzlement, but don't expect an expose in tomorrows issue of secret police pretending to be journalists, after all the owner has substantial interests in oil exploration himself.

The audio is quick soundbytes with half a dozen of the participants.

Fantastic, keep the pressure up, for every one of you who made the protest there are many more of us who'd have liked to. Great to hear the soundbites, almost like being there. And to turn the camera on the intelligence "photographers", the more these people's faces are known the better. The light of truth dispels darkness, lies & fear.

Firstly , thanks to everyone who turned out at the solidarity demo.
The news has been relayed to Maura, the locals and the camp activists and was received with great warmth and appreciation.
The energy levels down here are remarkably high, despite many people only having got 3-4 hours sleep for the past few nights.
Solidarity demos are helping keep us going,as is the knowledge that Shell and the state have been wounded by recent events.
Keep it up!!

UPDATE

MAURA AND THE SOLITAIRE

As I write I have just came from the gates of the compound where Maura continues her incredibly courageous and selfless action.
The numbers have swelled in the past hour,as the camp meeting finished and the 20 locals present were swelled by about 20-30 campers.
As Maura continues into Day 3 of her strike, the Solitaire has been confirmed to have moved slightly off the Donegal coast, but unfortunately is stationery, still visible through the fog from the shoreline.
We hope that it will move out of Irish territorial waters soon as Maura has become slightly disoriented as dehydration (although she is drinking water) is setting in.
She has vowed to abide by her original statement (which should be read at the other thread) and continue until the Solitaire has left Irish territorial waters.

POLICE
The police presence in the area has stabilised at the levels it was at this morningthat is quite heavy but not as bad as Tuesday night and Wednesday morning when the area was crammed with up to 100 members of arious units, some unmarked and unnumbered.
Special branch cars are still floating around the area, more obvious at this stage than the marked Garda cars (!)
The police appeared agitated about 20 minutes ago when the large crowd at the gate vigil swelled.
We will maintian the presence 24 hours and will not abandon Maura for a second in her hour of need.

FRIDAY
Action will continue tomorrow.
The media are finally watching and this is only as a result of massive effort and sacrifice over the past month.
We will not take our foot off the accelerator for one second.
This project must be scuppered at every available opportunity.

Is it the Fairies again? Could ask Eddie Lenehan - he spoke about the faries of Tara cursing the govt & contractors building the M3
http://www.savetara.com/articles/2007/062407_curse.html

Or was it Maedhbh? She's buried nearby. Most likely Manannan mac Lír with one of his white horses....He is the Gaelic God of the Sea...

They are being vague about the damage...has anyone in Killybegs had a look? or some photo's????

RTE and other mainstream media are being very vague about the sinking of Asgard ii as well...

Well done for such a good turnout, and well done to all in Mayo, esp. Maura - your bravery, strength and integrity had me in tears earlier.
