As a Catholic, Prof Roger Watson is sure Francis was appointed Pope for a reason. It's just that he's damned if he can figure out what it was. Certainly, it's not his liberalism that's drawn young people back to church.

Extend the 1967 Abortion Act to N.Ireland

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | opinion/analysis author Sunday October 05, 2008 23:34author by Sean Matthews - Alliance for Choice Report this post to the editors

Our Bodies, Our Lives, Our Right to Decide!

Alliance for Choice is an organisation that campaigns for the extension of the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland. It is made up of women and men, from both Catholic and Protestant communities in the North of Ireland, who want to see equality and self-determination for women here.

Much of our work has been about making heard the voices of the tens of thousands of women from NI who have had abortions in England and elsewhere since 1967 – thereby exposing the hypocrisy of the politicians who say there is “no demand for abortion rights” in NI.

The campaign are calling for people to support Diane Abbot's amendment to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill . If passed, then the 1967 Abortion Act will be extended to Northern Ireland and women here will gain the right to free, safe and legal abortion for the first time. We need to make our voices heard.
