 Let the animals roam free ! Veteran rights campaigner Peter Tatchell makes an impassioned plea in today’s London Independent for the rights of the thousands of animals languishing under the voyeuristic gaze of the gawping squawking horde that visits London Zoo each day. Cutting through all the prison/ Zoo’s PR spin , Peter points out that its primary concern lies in satisfying the prurience of these cash-cow visitors , and not in animal conservation . Tatchell’s stature has grown steadily over the years culminating in his selection last year as the Green Party's general election candidate for Oxford East . Reflecting the growing public revulsion at the squalid conditions in which animals are held captive by such so-called charitable institutions , he argues in his usual forthright ,unflinching style that London Zoo should be closed down .
