Liverpool University has asked its full-time support staff to come into the office for three days a week instead of two. Needless to say, their trade union is up in arms about this and 300 of its members are set to strike.

offsite link Is the War Against Iran in British or European Interests? Sun Jun 22, 2025 15:00 | Noah Carl
A collapse of the Iranian state would not be in Britain or the rest of Europe's interests. There could be another mass exodus of refugees to Europe?just like the one in 2015, only larger.

Dominic Cummings has given an interview to Kamal Ahmed in the Telegraph about the sclerotic British state. It's the usual critique that by now we're all familiar with, but cannot be repeated often enough.

Last night the US bombed three different nuclear sites in Iran in what is the most consequential decision of Trump's presidency to date. He has labelled the bombings a "spectacular military success?.

News from down the country

A slightly busier week -a quarry, a marina and a landfill

The day before Christmas Eve the West Askeaton Action Group (WAAG) heard that its objection against an appeal to An Bord Pleanala by Cemtex for a 35.9 hectare quarry at Ballyclogh, Co. Limerick, had been upheld. WAAG had first opposed an application for the quarry in 2007, when 318 people objected to Limerick County Council against the proposal. In January 2008 another application was submitted which led to WAAG calling a public meeting in opposition, after which more than 300 objections were lodged. When Limerick County Council refused Cemtex permission, it appealed to An Bord Pleanala, where it faced some 20 objections, including one from WAAG. WAAG PRO Jimmy Kelly said the news of the refusal ‘was great for all the people living here. I would hope it is the end of the line now.’ (Limerick Leader 3/1/09, p. 1).

People living close to Oxigen Environmental Ltd.’s landfill at Corranure, Co. Cavan complained that the closure of the site over the past few weeks has not dealt with the odour problem and some residents dismissed it as a PR exercise. Meanwhile Oxigen has announced it will re-open the site to waste material in the New Year, following consultations with the EPA. (Cavan Post 30/12/08, p.7; Anglo-Celt 1/1/09, p.1)

Verbal battles continue between Eclipse Developments, who are proposing to build a marina development at Ballina, Co. Tipperary and the Ballina Marina Action group (BMAG). In the latest exchange, BMAG accused the developers of failing to undertake meaningful consultations with local residents, of belittling community objections and of ‘issuing misleading and contradictory statements surrounding its planning application to develop the marina site’, all of which claims the developers reject. (Tipperary Star 3/1/09, p.1.3; Limerick Leader 3/1/09, p.19)

I'm afraid I'm getting bored of seeing this headline "News from down the country" repeatedly applied to different reports about events related to various environmental issues.

Do you think you could come up with a specific headline to summarise the content of each individual report, please?

Thanks in advance.

I think the title is fine and I look forward to reading this regular update on various issues from around the country. There are usually a broad range of campaigns covered and from a wide range of places so picking a succinct title that would be relevant to all would be difficult. By now most readers recognise Contaminated Crow's News from Down the Country and know what sort of report and material his (her?) posts contain. While it may not be the most informative title, it is catchy and a bit of a regular feature on Indymedia so lets just leave the Crow to get on with what he does best and not split hairs/feathers over the title.
