press release
Sunday January 11, 2009 13:36 by Kevin Murphy - 32 County Sovereignty Movement
How best to defend Irish democracy from undemocratic capitalist elites ? The National Chairperson of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement Francie Mackey has again highlighted and praised the efforts of all republican , socialist and progressive groups for their contribution to the temporary defeat of the EU Treaty in last Years referendum . However the apparent refusal of the national and intrnational capitalist elites to accept that popular decision and the increasing likelihood of their pushing ahead with a second referendum on the same Treaty in the upcoming year leaves all of us who opposed the Treaty on the grounds of national sovereignty , neutrality and principled socialist concerns with a common purpose . How best to defend Irish democracy and sovereignty from the undemocratic and arrogant mindsets of the powerful who regard such notions as an obstacle to their preferred political , economic and military order ?

I'd love to find out about any methods to encourage others to resist the massive Yessir propaganda that has already begun and can only escalate.
Many of us 'No's' don't have party affiliations (or their party has betrayed them), thus it's a daunting prospect to militate alone.
Is there already a national platform that one could join?
Thanks.
thevery basis for national sovereignty and democracy is the best argument to put against these attempts by capitalist crooks to completely eliminate these concepts from Irish life .
The First Dail
And The
European Union
32 County Sovereignty Movement 21-01-09
Brian Cowen’s misuse of the 90th Anniversary of the establishment of the First Dáil to justify his own government’s rejection of its people’s verdict on Lisbon exposes an ever deepening rift between the body politic of the twenty six county state and Irish sovereignty. Adding a misrepresentation of history to a misrepresentation of the impact of Lisbon on our sovereignty underscores the necessity of returning another No vote. When the First Dáil was confronted with a rejection to its Message To the Free Nations of The World it did not barter its sovereignty to gain favour with the political powers of the day. Unlike Mr Cowen, who went before the EU like a chastened schoolboy presenting them the NO Vote, the First Dáil stood firm behind the sovereignty of the people who elected it. This is the example that should be followed.
If Mr Cowen and the Parliament he represents choose to peddle the lie that the sovereignty of the First Dáil stopped at the border it bodes ill of any claim he may make concerning loss of sovereignty to the unelected EU Commission. Before Mr Cowen speaks of sharing Irish sovereignty with the EU Project perhaps he should consider ending the British violation of that sovereignty and allow the Irish people, as they did for the First Dáil, vote as a single unit on the issue.
The Democratic Programme adopted by the First Dáil outlined a vision for the social and economic development of our people.
“It shall be our duty to promote the development of the Nation's resources, to increase the productivity of its soil, to exploit its mineral deposits, peat bogs, and fisheries, its waterways and harbours, in the interests and for the benefit of the Irish people.”
It is unsurprising that Mr Cowen has failed in this also. The EU Project can indeed be a beneficial instrument for securing economic cooperation amongst sovereign states but it will not succeed when sovereignty is cheaply traded and democracy is subverted to the will of the political elite. The 32CSM call upon all those campaigning against the re-run Lisbon referendum to study the history of the First Dáil, the potency of our Declaration of Independence and the vision of the Democratic Programme.
Another interesting aspect which was touched upon was the role of the Trade Unions. The TEEU and Unite (?) came out against the Treaty whereas SIPTU equivocated linking its position to a government committment on Collective Bargaining. But now that it looks like the National Pay Deal is going to be scrapped by the government what value can any union, including Farmers, place on governmental assurances in return for support on Lisbon II?

Theres little doubt the 100% pro yes Irish media , including such qualified economic commentators as Gerry Ryan will attempt to use the current economic collapse as a scare tactic in order to justify having democracy overturned in their upcoming re-run of the referendum they lost . Such opinion formers see it as their duty to ensure the right and proper thing is done regardless of what people actually voted for ., or more precisely against . I agree with frank its essential that argument is robustly countered by the No camp .
Not the first time that 32CSM and their paramilitary friends have used a "countdown" now is it?
I'm also impressed with the quoting by another commentator of a US slave-owner in defence of the NO campaign.
"The greatest [calamity] which could befall [us would be] submission to a government of unlimited powers."
"An elective despotism was not the government we fought for, ..."
Thomas Jefferson: Declaration and Protest of Virginia, 1825. ME 17:445 at http://etext.virginia.edu/jefferson/quotations/jeff1060.htm
Its clear the economic argument will loom large in the next campaign especially as the No Vote will be blamed for the economic disaster that the political and financial elites have gotten us into. Its an angle that all those opposed to this treaty need to work on as is clear in this case. It should begin now.
