Apparently Direct Action gets results? For a number of years (4 at least) Circus Vegas and other Irish Circuses with animals,( American Circus, Sydney, New York etc,) have been the target of the ALF (Animal Liberation Front) who repeatedly removed or destroyed their signs on a regular basis. Over the years a court case retrieved the cost of an activists video camera that was smashed by a circus employee from Vegas Circus, 5 people were bitten by a monkey from Circus New York , a circus employee was injured by an elephant he was beating with a stick and animal rights activists were both psychically attached, one requiring face stitches and were threatened by circus security person wielding a knife in Blackrock,Dublin.(later denied by Circus when reported to Gardai). Tigers held in a beast wagon at a Duffys Circus site in Galway ripped off a mans arms back in the ninetys.Again proving that a circus is no place for animals. |

Ok well done to members of the public and more for doing this or more so for 'destroying' the signs hehehhehehe......but what about the animals who are still inside the circuses???????? why doesnt you animal rights groups start getting the animals out of there?????? that would be real direct action me thinks and of course lives saved but this has not happened and until i see real proof then i dont thing removing signs has any credibility....................!
Our belovéd Arts Council now gives large 'arts' grants to circuses - do these circuses have animals?
we still need to get the animals out of irish circuses and taking down posters or should i say 'destroying them) aint going to solve that problem - true direct action involved rescuing animals on indeed much more than de-postering....

Elephant droppings, which have a strawey consistency, make ideal, nutrient-rich material for garden compost. Should you happen upon a circus parade through the streets of a country town with an elephant in tow be sure to bring a shovel and cardboard box immediately to the scene of an excretory event. Agriculturists in Africa and Asia have analyzed elephant droppings and found large percentages of nitrogen (coming from the staple diet of grass and leaves) and quantities of nuts and fruit. In Central Africa naturalists observed that during the rainy season wild adult male elephants defecated 15-17 times daily. Irish climatic conditions and feeding habits of incarcerated circus elephants will obviously result in a variable daily defecation yield. Has any research been done on how Irish circuses dispose of elephant droppings? This question could be phoned to the Saturday morning gardening programme on RTE Radio 1, perhaps.

This is great but we don't see anything like this in Ireland - come on if there is ALF out there then please do more than just 'destroy' plastic and cardboard signs. Get animals out of circuses in Ireland - taking down posters won't get them out of there, will someone please enlighten me?
To those who dismiss ALF Ireland.... yet bemoan the plight o the circus animals. Why not go rescue someone yourselves???
Fact is, an elephant is rather difficult to smuggle away in the middle of the night. And even if that were possibble, where ould one put an elephant???
Another fact is that Courneys would seem to have stopped using animals due to prssure from ALF Ireland and other groups. Is not this the point? To stop thecycle of abuse and esure no more individuals fall victim to such abuse?
The way I see it, little ouldbe done for the animals already help captive (an elephant being so hard to rehome and all)but if they stop using them, at least the cycle of abuse will stop.
Shame on you all for criticizing without acting. If you have a problem with the MO if the rish ALF, then off you go and do your own direct action the way you see fit!
I don't think I could agree with the circus anymore after what the chipperfields did to a baby monkey-it was in the papers when I was young. I am totally AGAINST the abuse of animals and support a full ban on circuses. Years ago I went but walked out of booterstown when i saw misuse of the whip by a well known irish circus. how dare anyone leave animals in these conditions.the argument "oh if we let them back into the wild now they would die" does not wash with me. the people who have these anmals should have criminal charges brought against them and never allowed have animals again. A relation of mine has an iguana and i will be repoting him next-i dont agree with people havin them in such small places. Can you leave a number i want to get inolved in this campaign.
Cat lady???????????? Of course it was only a matter of time before you'd have your mouth piece. Relating to this issue i was specifically awaiting your particular response (wherever the hell you get all of this time to mouth on indymedia and more) your typical response contradicts yourself judging from previous postings once again from you, but this is not surprising. I would definitly question your motives to be frank, then again your response to this particular article was what i was looking for and may i state specifically from you only.
Wishing people who fight for animal rights in Ireland a great year..............................................................................................
Releasing elephants from circus incarceration would not be an appropriate answer. Who would feed them? I can't envisage kind-hearted farmers letting elephants have the free run of their haybarns; nor could householders keep them as pets in their backyards. See this cartoon illustration -

Lar fair play to you. Contact bernie at the email address in the title and she will let you know any info and put you on the mailing list I am sure!
The baby chimp ypou refer to is (I think) the one Mary Chipperfield brutalised and was fortunately filmed doing so. Good news is the chimp (Trudy I think is her name) is now happy and healthy and living in Monkey World in Dorset - a fantastic rescue operation for monkeys and apes, saving them from circuses and the pet trade worldwide.
ello ello.... you have me baffled. I obviously feature on your radar as a big blip, whereas you don't feature on mine at all. Who are you??? Where have you come from???? Why do you spend your time awaiting my posts???? Do I have an indymedia stalker???? Yikes!!!!!
Seriously, your post makes no sense to me so I doubt it makes any sense to anyone else (apart from you). If you care to elucidate I will certainly address any concerns you may have as regards to my motives (a very baffling notion from you) or anything else. You do however have to pose a clear question in order for me to be able to respond. You strange strange person you!!!!!
The only thing I can answer from your post is where I get the time to post here. I am an insomniac. Note the time on any of my posts in the last months. Its a horrible affliction but not much to do at 3am in rural Ireland! Thank GOD for broadband!
well?
bring it on!
