Windsor Not Welcome in Ireland

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | press release author Tuesday August 18, 2009 15:11author by PRO - éirígíauthor email press at eirigi dot org Report this post to the editors

éirígí chairperson Brian Leeson has reiterated the socialist republican party’s commitment to oppose any visit to Ireland by Elizabeth Windsor in response to comments by the outgoing British ambassador David Reddaway.

In a media interview published yesterday [Monday], Reddaway said that he is “very hopeful” that Windsor, the commander-in-chief of Britain’s armed forces, would make a state visit to the Twenty-Six Counties “before too long”.

Reddaway also stated that, despite the continuing occupation of the Six Counties, the relationship between Britain and Ireland had been “transformed”.

Leeson said: “éirígí’s position on this issue has been clear for a long time. As long as the British occupation of the Six Counties continues, Elizabeth Windsor is not welcome in any part of Ireland. We will actively oppose the extension of any invite to Windsor to visit the Twenty-Six Counties as well as any subsequent visit.

“A number of figures who have been central to the British government’s normalisation strategy in the Six Counties have, for a long time, been talking up the possibility of a state visit by Windsor. This is the context any invite and visit should be seen in – it would be another attempt by the British establishment to portray its occupation of the North as acceptable and normal.

“Even David Reddaway has admitted that relations between Britain and Ireland are not normal. Considering the fact that the British government continues to deny the Irish peoples’ right to democracy and national unity, how could relations be normal?”

Leeson continued: “The British government, its embassy in Ireland and the Twenty-Six County government should be under no illusions that a state visit by Elizabeth Windsor will be vigorously opposed by Irish republicans.

“Until the British army gets out of Ireland, its commander-in-chief should stay out of Ireland.”
ENDS.

Note to editor 1: éirígí has been running a campaign against British royal visits to Ireland for a number of years. More details are available at http://www.eirigi.org/campaigns/ImperialistsoutofIrelan....html

QE 2 has the notional power to dismiss a British Prime Minister; it has never been used. But her rep, the Governor General, did dismiss a left wing Australian Prime Minister in the 1970s. This is a power which could be used, for example, against a PM who proposed disengagement for the six counties.

This 'peaceful poewerless' 'LADY', as you describe the british monarch is anything but..
She is no lady, nor any of the other things you describe. She sits atop her empire, commonwealth (now theres a notion to prove my assertion being contested by pete) or whatever name you choose to put on it.
You must be from the kevin Meyers school of journalism where the British graced this planet with their loving hand of friendship.
She is a figurehead all right, but she is and stands for so much more. Figureheads serve a greater purpose than you are capable of knowing if you describe her as 'powerless'.

Either way, she represents all that the Irish have suffered for centuries and you welcome her here???. She is not welcome without retribution.

"How Empire convinces itself and satisfies itself that their underlings are contented with their dominance."

You are not seriously suggesting that this peaceful powerless "Figurehead" old lady is here to "Do the Irish in"?

You MUST be having us on Paul?

Let the little old lady come to our country and when she arrives, let the world know by our protests how unwelcome she is on our island. The world media will carry the message that Ireland is still under British rule and we must ensure that Granny Lizzie takes the message home from Ireland. Brits- get out of Ireland.

I was in Windsor yesterday and the 'Queens Own Irish Guards', are in residence in Windsor Castle at the moment.
They are there to 'protect their Queen'.....
How Empire convinces itself and satisfies itself that their underlings are contented with their dominance. There is nothing less ignorant than seeing the so called..'Irish'.guards..protecting that which the Irish have opposed for more than 800 years.
Is she also naked and no one is brave enough to tell her?...who knows ?
The irony is that , on the side wall of the barraks is an enormous advertisment looking for new recruits, while the local watering hole (and I mean hole) is kept buisy with keping the returned troops drunk who cant re-adjust to civilian life, and not killing civilians on a daily basis in Afghanistan. Good kids im sure they were...misled as they always are by the notion of patriotism by genocide for the same 'Queen' in residence in Windsor Castle.. The kill rate in Afghanistan is 1,000 to 1. Theyre wiping out village after village from the air with no restraint. They are trained to say when they kill kids that they 'thought' iit was 'enemy combattants'....'that way you can avoid warcrimes ......'your perception is all that matters'. 'on the ground'...says one 'trainer'.
