Detention of fishing vessels, two quarries, a telemast, a pet crematorium and an airport runway extension Two fishing vessels from the village of Cromane, Co. Kerry, were detained by the Irish Navy last Tuesday for dredging mussel seed in Castlemaine Harbour, an area where people from the village have fished for generations, but which has been closed to local fishing people under the EU Wildlife Directives. (Kerryman (sic) 2/9/09, pp. 1,5,30).
Local residents called a public meeting for 8.30 PM on September 3rd at the Lord Bagenal to express concern at an application by Dan Morrissey Quarries (DMQ) to shut down two stretches of public road on the back road from Bagnalstown to Carlow. Local also believe DMQ wish to extend its quarrying activities in the area. (Carlow Nationalist 4/9/09, pp. 1,2).
Roscommon County Council has granted Earl Lawless permission for a sand and gravel quarry at Castlesampson, Bealnamullia, Co. Roscommon, despite opposition from local residents. (Roscommon Herald 1/9/09, p. 2).
A public meeting was called for Wednesday September 2nd at the Community Centre, Granard, Co. Longford, to oppose an application by 02, Vodafone and Tetra for an extension to a telemast in the town. Local resident Pat Sheridan said ‘What we are asking for is for Longford County Council planning authorities to reject this’. (Longford News 2/9/09, p. 2; Longford Leader 4/9/09, p. 10).
Local residents concerned at possible pollution are renewing their opposition to a proposal by Keelgrove Construction Ltd. to build a pet
crematorium in Nenagh, Co. Tippeary. (Nenagh Guardian 5/9/09, p. 9).
The Dorrins and Cumeen Strand Conservation Group, which is opposing the extension of Sligo Airport’s runway onto Dorrins Strand, denied it
was
anti-development last week, while also querying whether Sligo Airport is ‘essential’
for the development of the Northwest. (Sligo Champion 2/9/09, p. 23).
